Newsom Slams Target CEO Over LGBTQ Item Removal

Gavin Newsom criticized Target's CEO for taking away LGBTQ and Pride Month goods from their stores due to negative feedback and violence threats.

On Tuesday night, Newsom tweeted about CEO of Target, Brian Cornell. Newsom said Cornell is betraying the LGBTQ+ community by giving in to extremists. Newsom thinks this is happening all over the country.

America needs to wake up. This is not the end. Being black, Asian, Jewish or a woman means you're the target next. That's what the governor of California said.

Target alters plans to promote and sell Pride Month merchandise. The merchandise has been available since May. Pride Month is in June. Target blames "volatile circumstances." These circumstances affect staff's safety and well-being. Adjustments were made to plans.

Target didn't specify which products will be taken off shelves but said it put its Pride products at the back in Southern stores.

Target said that their team members have felt threatened at work since they released their new collection. This has affected their safety and happiness. So, Target will be changing their plans and removing certain items that have caused the most issues.

The FBI said hate crimes against people based on their sexual orientation rose by 54% from 2020 to 2021. Additionally, hate crimes against transgender and gender-nonconforming people rose by 29% in 2021.
