Sadiq Khan and Susan Hall face anxious wait for mayoral result after polls close

London mayor election

According to the Savanta study conducted for the Centre for London, the Labour mayor is currently holding a lead of 42%, with the Tory politician trailing behind with 32%. This is just one of many polls that have indicated Mr. Khan's lead shrinking throughout the election.

Votes will be confirmed this Friday, but the genuine calculation of the votes won't occur until Saturday. It will be carried out by a large number of volunteers who will physically count the votes at 14 different locations.

The ballots will be tallied in conjunction with the voting for the London Assembly elections. The initial outcomes are anticipated to be revealed approximately at midday on Saturday, while rumors suggest that by 1:30pm there might be a clear indication of the victor. However, the definitive result will not be announced until the evening.

The campaign hasn't consistently grabbed the public's interest but it has had some lively moments. One such moment was when the Mayor's Ulez expansion became a clear point of disagreement. Ms Hall was in favor of scrapping it, while Mr Khan said his opponent would get rid of free school meals for primary school kids. This was in response to her suggestion that free school meals should be a temporary measure to alleviate the cost of living.

Some other things that set Ms Hall and Mr Khan apart are their proposed plans. Ms Hall wants to extend the Night Tube to the Hammersmith & City Line and bring in 1,500 additional members to the Metropolitan Police. On the other hand, Mr Khan promises a fare freeze for TFL until "at least 2025" and aims to eliminate homelessness in London by 2030.

During LBC's London mayoral hustings, Susan Hall and Sadiq Khan got into a heated argument.

There are more places than just London where elections are taking place. The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, is prepared for a tough challenge with predictions indicating that the Conservative Party could potentially lose up to 50% of their council seats that they are trying to secure. Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has admitted the party is expecting to face major setbacks.

The initial outcomes of the regional elections are expected to be announced overnight, and additional outcomes will be disclosed on Friday.

The UK's ruling party, the Conservatives, are hoping that two of their well-known mayors, namely Andy Street in the West Midlands and Ben Houchen in Tees Valley, will be able to secure their positions in the upcoming elections, which are expected to be tightly contested against their Labour rivals.

The Labour party isn't too confident about winning the mayoral election since the current system seems to benefit those who are already in power. However, Sir Keir Starmer remains optimistic and expressed his hope of winning the West Midlands contest during an interview with Sky News.

If Mr. Street and Mr. Houchen win, it could be a positive outcome for the Conservative party amidst predictions of a disappointing election season. Nonetheless, experts caution that the metro mayor elections hold little predictive power for what may occur in a future general election.

The outcome is anticipated to be revealed on Friday afternoon, but leading up to that time, many local councils ranging from Southend-On-Sea and Thurrock to Bolton and Hartlepool are expected to announce their results. Additionally, the Blackpool South by-election is also expected to have an overnight result. The Labour Party is the favorite to win in this by-election after the former Conservative MP, Scott Benton, resigned due to his involvement in a lobbying scandal.

All of these events are happening amidst terrible poll results for the government. According to reports, some Conservative members of parliament who are not in the government could try to challenge the Prime Minister's leadership if the elections go very badly, especially in the West Midlands and Tees Valley where the outcome is seen as very important for Mr Sunak's future.

Newly conducted surveys show that the conservative party's approval ratings are currently lower than they were even when Liz Truss was in charge.

A new poll by YouGov/Times has shown a decline in the Tory's voting intention, as they now stand at 18%. This is a decrease of two points in just one month, and marks the lowest vote share for the Conservatives in this current Parliament. Interestingly, this figure is even lower than when Ms Truss was in power and their vote share dropped to just 19%.

On the other hand, the Labour party has a current polling percentage of 44%. However, a few of Mr. Sunak's top ministers such as Kemi Badenoch and Penny Mordaunt have openly shown their support towards him. These two ministers are also considered potential leaders in case the position becomes available.
