Emma Raducanu into third round at Indian Wells after Yastremska abandons

Emma Raducanu

Emma Raducanu progressed to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells due to Dayana Yastremska withdrawing from their second-round match. Yastremska was unable to continue the game due to a stomach problem while trailing 4-0, 15-0 after just 23 minutes of play. Raducanu benefited from the unfortunate situation and advanced in the tournament.

Raducanu has made it to the third round, which is the furthest she has advanced since returning to the competition this year. She had to undergo surgery on both her hands and an ankle back in 2023. This is the first time she has made it this far after those surgeries. She is 21 years old and will remain in the top 300 players in the world. The results from this round have given her a ranking of No. 287 in the WTA.

In the current state of women's tennis, a significant challenge may be on the horizon for a certain player. It appears that she is expected to compete against Aryna Sabalenka, who holds the Australian Open title and is ranked as the No. 2 seed. Sabalenka was set to play against the favored Peyton Stearns on Saturday.

Raducanu started the tournament with a simple win against Rebeka Masarova, who had to qualify to participate, on Thursday. In the following round, she faced a chance to gauge her skills against high-level competitors.

Yastremska had a few difficult seasons but managed to make a comeback this year and is now in the top 30. She is known for her powerful shots and determination to play by her own rules, without much consideration for her opponents' strategies. However, this has also led to her being inconsistent even during her successful periods. Yastremska reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open this year, which was a great achievement, but since then, her performance has been less impressive with only two wins. She is still trying to find her momentum and replicate her success from earlier in the year.

Raducanu's task was to control Yastremska's powerful shots, minimize her own mistakes, and counterattack when possible. She executed her plan flawlessly at the beginning by returning well and serving strongly in a tense first game. Throughout the match, she remained steady and composed.

Ever since Yastremska messed up a simple volley, she appeared completely out of sorts. She made unnecessary errors during the starting games and rapidly trailed behind 4-0.

Yastremska was losing the match with a score of 0-15 during the fifth game. She moved backwards to the fence while holding her stomach, and looked to be in pain. The umpire, Kader Nouni, escorted Yastremska to her seat, where the players hugged before the Ukrainian player retired from the game.

Raducanu may not have gained a lot of new knowledge from her brief stint on the court versus her sick adversary within the mere span of 23 minutes. However, she could still find some peace knowing that she appeared stable and at ease during the initial phase of the game. It's also noteworthy that, for once, she wasn't the one wrestling with physical ailments. Nevertheless, a new challenge looms for her on Monday.

In the men's section, Cameron Norrie had a comfortable victory over Lorenzo Sonego with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. Cameron Norrie, who is the top British player, will face either Hubert Hurkacz or Gäel Monfils in the next round. The match between the two players will take place later in the evening.
