After a prolonged period of being out of action due to injury, Emma Raducanu made a triumphant return. She emerged victorious in a challenging three-set match against Elena-Gabriela Ruse during the opening round of the ASB Classic in Auckland.

The ex-British top-ranked tennis player participated in her initial match after undergoing surgeries on her wrists and ankle in April. Despite the efforts of the Romanian qualifier to stage a comeback, the former British No. 1 advanced, clinching a nerve-wracking victory with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. As she gets ready for the Australian Open, she will face a challenging match against Elina Svitolina, the second seed in the last-16 round of the tournament.

Raducanu expressed that although it was challenging to have been away for a significant amount of time, she is thankful for being in good health. She is grateful for being able to move her body freely without being confined to a bed or wheelchair. These remarks were made by Raducanu on the court, following her win in a match that lasted two hours and twenty-seven minutes.

"Just being here and having the opportunity to play is truly remarkable. I'm grateful to be back on the tour and excited to kick off the season. My ultimate goal is to stay healthy and avoid any injuries."

Raducanu, who was given a special entry into the tournament, had fallen to the 301st position in the global rankings. However, she started playing again and expressed feeling as if she had been given a fresh start. She declared herself free from the pressure of her famous US Open victory in 2021.

After playing just nine matches in 2023, she didn't seem to be out of practice as she won the first set in 37 minutes by taking advantage of her third break point in game eight.

However, any expectations of a smooth advancement were instantly shattered as Ruse fought back. Despite being ranked as the world No 134, she resiliently prevented three break points in the first game of the second set, which lasted for 11 minutes. Following that, she won two of Raducanu's next three service games, which turned the tide of the match.

Raducanu showed incredible determination even when she was trailing 5-2. She managed to bring the match back to a serve, but unfortunately couldn't hold onto it, leading to a decider. Throughout the whole contest, the 21-year-old displayed moments of excellence, such as an impressive backhand slice winner. Despite Ruse's unwavering effort, Raducanu refused to back down and ultimately emerged victorious.

She lost the lead of 5-2 in the final set and missed out on two chances to win the match when her opponent was serving. However, she didn't give up and managed to make a strong comeback and win the match. This was an encouraging victory for her after being away from the game for eight months.

Raducanu expressed her gratitude to all who braved the chilly weather and stayed until the late hours to support her. She appreciates their unwavering support throughout. The match she played with her friend Gabi had its own highs and lows. As always, it's challenging to face a close friend on the court. Auckland is a lovely place, and Raducanu is thrilled to be back. She expressed her heartfelt appreciation to everyone and hopes to see them in the upcoming round.
