Real Madrid hold off Leipzig to reach quarter-finals

Real Madrid

Vinicius Junior has participated in a total of 14 goals in the last 13 games of the Champions League. Within these matches, he has scored a total of eight goals and has assisted in six more.

Real Madrid advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after Vinicius Junior produced a superb goal that RB Leipzig couldn't match, allowing Real Madrid to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory in the last 16.

Similar to the initial half, the team from Germany known as Leipzig were punished for not converting numerous opportunities when Vinicius scored with a delicate touch after receiving a pass from Jude Bellingham with 25 minutes remaining in the game, solidifying their 2-0 advantage.

After a brief lapse of time, Leipzig was finally able to make good use of an opening. This happened just under three minutes after skipper Willi Orban managed to score a goal with his spot-on header.

The objective gave a fresh sense of confidence to the German football team and they persisted in attacking the top team of the Spanish league as they aimed to equalize.

Ex-Barcelona player Dani Olmo had a near miss that could have led to extra time in the match. However, it was important to note that the rule of away goals not counting in Uefa competitions was in effect. Olmo's header was not on target and hit the top part of the crossbar during injury time.

Real Madrid has set themselves a goal to win the European championship for the 15th time and they managed to hold their ground, securing a spot in the quarter-finals for the 12th time out of the last 14 seasons.

Carlo Ancelotti's team will discover their challengers in the quarter-finals after the draw for the final eight is conducted on Friday, March 15th at 11:00 in the morning GMT.

Madrid Advances As World-class Players Score World-class Goal

With a slim advantage achieved by Brahim Diaz's outstanding goal in the previous match, Real Madrid was expected to display their skill and know-how to secure a victory on their own territory.

Ancelotti was determined to emphasize that the match result was not conclusive. He repeated this reminder in the press conference prior to the upcoming match to prevent his team from becoming too comfortable and overconfident.

However, his team did not perform to their full potential and considering how both games went, they were lucky to advance.

Real Madrid failed to make a single shot on target during the first half and struggled to come up with new strategies after the second half began.

The Bernabeu stadium audience expressed their worries through whistles when Leipzig had the ball. The spectators became increasingly frustrated as Real repeatedly lost possession in a careless manner.

Nonetheless, they have a plethora of potent attacking skills - headed by the Brazilian striker Vinicius and the English midfielder Bellingham - and the team playing at home ultimately found their rhythm.

Toni Kroos, a powerful midfielder from Germany, retrieved the ball close to his own penalty area and quickly passed it to Bellingham to launch a counter attack. This move became a cause for concern for Leipzig.

Bellingham walked assuredly ahead while spotting Vinicius's run. Vinicius cleverly moved from the left towards the center and expertly shot a high ball into the top corner.

A moment of genius, similar to what happened in their previous match in Germany, was all that the Spanish team needed to win. However, they are aware that they need to improve their performance no matter who they play against in the quarter-finals.

Former English midfielder, Owen Hargreaves, commented on TNT Sports regarding the incredible goal made by world-class players. Despite Madrid's mediocre performance in the past two games, Hargreaves noted that exceptional players have the ability to secure victories in a matter of seconds.

Leipzig dominated the game for a large part of the match, causing the home team to remain confined in their own half. The visitors demonstrated courage and boldness in front of the massive crowd of 80,000 at the renovated Bernabeu, firing a total of 20 shots at the home team's goal.

Belgium striker Lois Openda had the best opportunities to score, but his inability to stay calm in dangerous situations hindered Leipzig's efforts to tie the game and potentially come out victorious.

The late push wasn't enough to save the day. In the end, the team who made it to the semi-finals in 2019-20 didn't make it past the last 16 for the fourth year in a row. All their hard work was for nothing.
