Man Utd see off League One Wigan in FA Cup

Man Utd

Erik ten Hag's team advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup after Manchester United displayed their superior strength against League One Wigan Athletic.

In the 22nd minute, Diogo Dalot scored a beautiful curling goal to give the 12-time champions the lead. This happened after Marcus Rashford made a great shot that was blocked.

Rasmus Hojlund attempted to score with a diving header but unfortunately the ball hit the bar. Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle couldn't keep hold of Rashford's shot which hit the post and bounced away. United's Alejandro Garnacho struck the ball hard from a distance of 20 yards but it hit the woodwork too, adding to their attempts to score a second goal.

Martial Godo missed an opportunity to score and make the match even for the home team, from a distance of six yards. Unfortunately, United managed to win the game in the second half.

During the game, Bruno Fernandes received a penalty due to Liam Shaw's challenge, which caused his foot to be clipped. Despite this, the Portuguese midfielder managed to get back up and successfully convert from the spot, adding an additional goal to United's score.

Shortly before the start of the game, the drawing for the fourth round happened and Manchester United will compete against either Newport County, ranked 18th in League Two, or Eastleigh who are a non-league team ranked 11th in the National League and are the second-lowest team remaining in the competition.

The clubs are going to play once again next week because their match ended in a draw of 1-1 last weekend in south Wales. The fourth round will occur during the final weekend of January.

'Everyone Craves To Win This Gigantic Contest'

United made 33 tries to score but only managed to score twice. Fortunately, Tickle was able to prevent more goals and keep the score low at 2-0. Ten Hag was satisfied with the win.

"The ultimate goal is to win," stated the individual from the Netherlands. "During the first portion of the match, it was gratifying to observe our style of play, the manner in which we maneuvered the ball and generated numerous opportunities."

We missed opportunities to get more points, but the positive aspect is that we generated many chances. Despite the large number of players who are sidelined due to sickness or injury, we still had a competitive team.

We were sure we would win the game and never think less of our opponent. We knew they would do their best because it meant everything to them, but we handled the situation with ease.

The tournament is quite significant, and all the participants aspire to be victorious. Each of the managers is enthusiastic about winning, thus; we treated it with great importance.

The game took place in front of a completely sold-out audience at DW Stadium, marking the first time in over a decade. Wigan, who were on the brink of shutting down during the summer, but were saved when a local entrepreneur named Mike Danson took ownership of the team, aimed to surprise everyone in this particular round.

22,870 people showed up at the game, which is the most since 23,001 attended a match between Wigan and Aston Villa on May 19, 2013. This was the final game that Wigan played in the Premier League.

"United Pros: Job Done!"

The team that was playing at home almost had a perfect beginning, but unfortunately, Thelo Aasgaard's shot was prevented by goalkeeper Andre Onana. He made an amazing save even though he may be leaving United soon to participate with the Cameroon national team in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The audience at home felt optimistic after seeing Wigan play, who are currently in 18th position in League One. They could potentially create their greatest upset in the FA Cup since defeating Pep Guardiola's Manchester City 1-0, whilst being a League One team, in the fifth round at the DW Stadium in 2018.

United is banking on winning the FA Cup to turn around their difficult season, which has resulted in 14 losses so far.

They currently hold the eighth place in the Premier League standings. Unfortunately, their attempt to defend the Carabao Cup only got them as far as the last 16. Their performance in the Champions League was quite disheartening as they ended up finishing last in their group, and to make matters worse, they had to say goodbye to European football before the holidays.

Ten Hag displayed the significance of this tournament when he chose his best available players to form his team. They nearly dominated a squad of players who were 54 spots lower than them in the hierarchy of English football.

Scott McTominay and Rashford didn't manage to capitalize on their opportunities, which made it inevitable for the opposing team to score with Dalot's splendid curling shot.

Hojlund and McTominay had chances that they failed to convert, resulting in United being unable to secure a victory before the first half ended.

Shaun Maloney, who was part of the team that defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the 2013 final, is in charge of Wigan. This was the club's greatest achievement to date. Despite facing a lot of pressure in their latest match, Wigan could have equalized if Godo had moved his feet faster while in the center, or if Stephen Humphrys' shot had gone in the bottom corner instead of just missing.

The Latics did not appear to have any chance of scoring and tying up the game before Fernandes scored a penalty, securing a well-earned and necessary win for United.

Maloney stated that he was satisfied with both the outcome and the penalty given for United's second goal. Furthermore, he affirmed, "I take pride in the effort put forth by our players."

The game was quite challenging, and United put up an excellent performance, making it a very formidable adversary. We made an effort to be as forceful as possible, but it was quite demanding.

We persisted and relied on our goalkeeper to make some crucial saves. Manchester United had numerous opportunities, but I cannot fault the dedication displayed by our team.

We exhibited some ability and some of our players delivered commendable individual displays when we played with the weight of expectations on our shoulders. Losing is never pleasant, but I trust that we will learn something from it and utilize that knowledge in the coming weeks.
