Oscar Piastri wins Hungarian Grand Prix after Lando Norris row

Lando Norris

Oscar Piastri won his first grand prix race in a McLaren one-two finish, with Lando Norris coming in second in an intense race in Hungary. There was controversy surrounding team orders during the event.

In the midst of a competitive race, longtime opponents Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen clashed while vying for third place.

Both drivers kept going, but Hamilton managed to stay in third place, while the Red Bull driver, who received many angry radio messages during the race, fell back and ended up finishing fifth, behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

The McLaren team faced controversy with their team orders as they attempted to secure a one-two finish, marking their first one since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix.

Piastri was in front of Norris for the majority of the race following his move to the front during a close battle involving Verstappen at the first corner.

However, a previous strategic pit stop for Norris, made by McLaren to defend against Hamilton's Mercedes, which had pitted earlier, allowed him to surpass Piastri.

Norris was reminded multiple times to slow down and let Piastri pass, and was reminded of his duty to the team. However, he chose not to comply until only two laps remained.

His colleague, engineer Will Joseph, advised him to "recall the Sunday morning meetings" and "I made an effort to safeguard you".

He also informed him that "to become a champion, you must rely on your team - you'll require Oscar and the rest of the team".

Norris insisted that Piastri needed to catch up to him before he would allow him to pass, but meanwhile, he continued to increase the gap between them.

For a while, it seemed like Norris would not follow through with the order, but eventually he agreed.

The crash between Hamilton and Verstappen occurred during the 63rd lap when the Red Bull driver tried to pass on the inside at Turn One.

The driver from the Netherlands missed the turn, causing Hamilton's front left wheel to collide with Verstappen's right rear wheel as the Red Bull car shot past and off the track.

Verstappen reached his breaking point in a heated race where he criticized Red Bull's strategic decisions. Initially falling behind Hamilton due to their choices and later losing ground to Leclerc after a second pit stop.

Verstappen managed to catch up to and overtake Leclerc, but his frustration appeared to affect his driving when he attempted to pass Hamilton.

This was their second fight in the race. Verstappen had been following Hamilton closely in the second part of the race. He had pitted later than the Mercedes driver and despite trying multiple times, he couldn't overtake him.

Verstappen expressed frustration with his car's performance, grip issues, and the pit-stop decisions made by his team. When his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, scolded him for pushing his tires too hard after his last stop, Verstappen responded with another swear word.

"I don't want to hear that excuse," he stated. "You all provided me with this plan. I am trying to save my people."

However, he went against expectations and fell behind Leclerc after the crash, making it difficult for him to catch up to the Ferrari.

Piastri jumped ahead right from the beginning, pulling ahead of Norris as he took off quickly from the starting line and made a successful move on the inside at Turn One.

They raced three abreast around the corner, with Verstappen on the outer edge. Verstappen then drove into the run-off area when Piastri and Norris moved slightly left. Verstappen cleverly passed Norris using a slingshot maneuver as Norris re-entered the track.

Norris raised concerns that Verstappen had violated the regulations and should relinquish his position. Despite Verstappen's objections, Red Bull ultimately instructed him to surrender the place once the stewards decided to look into the incident.

Verstappen did that, but he came back with the initial of many furious messages.

In the beginning, Piastri appeared to be dominating the race, increasing his lead to over three seconds before making his first pit stop. He then expanded his advantage to nearly five seconds by lap 32, just before reaching the halfway point of the race.

However, when he overshot the fast Turn 11, his lead quickly decreased to 2.1 seconds, and Norris started to catch up.

Norris maintained a lead of under two seconds for 10 laps, until the McLaren team decided to bring the British driver in for a pit stop to prevent him from losing his lead to Hamilton, who had already made his last stop on lap 40.

McLaren took a chance by pitting Norris, worrying that Hamilton would gain ground with his new tires and force Norris to fall back when he eventually pitted.

McLaren decided to bring Norris into the pits as a strategic move to prevent any potential issues, and shortly after they also made the decision to stop Piastri.

However, this resulted in Norris having an advantage with his new tires. As a result, when Piastri got back on the track, he was three seconds behind his fellow team member.

The negotiations about the race's winner went on for 20 laps, until Norris ultimately realized that it was in his best interest to follow instructions.

Following Verstappen, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz finished in sixth place, with Sergio Perez from Red Bull and George Russell from Mercedes making impressive comebacks from their starting positions towards the rear of the grid to secure seventh and eighth place.

RB's Yuki Tsunoda and Aston Martin's Lance Stroll finished in ninth and 10th place to earn some points.
