Home secretary described Stockton as ‘shit-hole’, MP claims

James Cleverly

During the session of Prime Minister's questions, a Member of Parliament from the Labour party stated that the area he represents was referred to as a "terrible place" by the Minister of the Interior, James Cleverly.

Alex Cunningham claimed that Cleverly had used the phrase when the Labour representative representing Stockton North inquired about the alarming statistics regarding the poverty rate of 34% amongst children in his constituency.

During a recent parliamentary session, Cunningham addressed the deputy speaker, Eleanor Laing, to bring up a point of order. He then proceeded to share his thoughts on Cleverly, stating that Cleverly had made a comment along the lines of "Because it's a terrible place," which caused a surprised reaction from other Labour members in attendance.

Cunningham reported that he had reached out to Cleverly's office and informed them of his intention to reveal the minister's name, but unfortunately, the minister was absent from the chamber.

Cleverly has rejected the statement to the Guardian, stating that he did not utter the word.

Cunningham stated: "Even though he denies being responsible, Madam Deputy Speaker, the audio is evident and has been thoroughly verified. It's undeniable that these statements display disgraceful behavior from the home secretary, this corrupt administration, and the Tory party."

Cunningham inquired about obtaining an apology from the newly appointed home secretary for the use of derogatory language and insulting behavior.

Laing explained that based on her understanding, the speaker of the House of Commons did not catch any comment like it before, and the reported words were not truly spoken, "although I acknowledge the statement made by the respected gentleman."

The speaker stated that during the hectic Prime Minister's Questions session, it can be challenging to interpret what was actually said. Hence, the speaker refrained from making any decisive verdict based on the unclear circumstances. However, she empathized with the concern expressed by the honourable gentleman.

It is important that all members of this chamber remember to use respectful and appropriate language towards one another, their constituencies, and their constituents. It is vital that we exhibit a calm and moderated demeanor while conducting our duties. Let us make sure to uphold the respectable mannerisms expected of us in this esteemed position.

Laing expressed her certainty that an apology will be given in case it is deemed necessary.

Cleverly's representative stated that the home secretary didn't utter the words that Cunningham had alleged. They further mentioned that he feels disheartened to be accused of such a thing.
