Baby Reindeer

Baby Reindeer

Reindeer are known for their festive association with Santa Claus, but did you know that they are also some of the most fascinating creatures in the animal kingdom? The life cycle of the reindeer is an incredible journey, beginning with the birth of the baby reindeer.

Born in the Wild

Baby reindeer, or calves, are born in the wild during late May to early June. They weigh between 5 and 20 pounds, and most are born with a white spotted coat that helps them blend in with the snow. The mother reindeer, or doe, feeds them with her milk, which is high in fat and provides them with the nutrients they need to survive in the harsh environment of the Arctic tundra. As the calves grow, they will shed their spotted coat and develop a darker, thicker coat that will protect them from the cold. Within hours of birth, they are already up and walking, learning to follow the herd and evade predators. The survival skills they acquire in their early days are critical for their survival throughout their lives.
