Villa come from behind to beat Bournemouth

Aston Villa vs Bournemouth

Aston Villa has achieved a total of 20 victories in the Premier League, marking the first time since 1992-93 that they have reached this milestone in a single season.

Aston Villa managed to recover from a losing position to defeat Bournemouth and remain on course to achieve their goal of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League.

Only 72 hours following their triumph over Lille in a penalty shootout, accessing the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League, Villa had to switch gears and concentrate on achieving their best position in the Premier League standings in 28 years.

The start of the match wasn't good because Bournemouth was given an opportunity to score when Matty Cash fouled Milos Kerkez, resulting in a penalty. Dominic Solanke, who is their leading scorer, successfully scored from 12 yards.

However, Villa kept a optimistic attitude and received their deserved outcome just before breaking for half-time, as Morgan Rogers - who recently joined the team at the beginning of the year - hit a powerful shot into the top of the net.

Although Villa had played for 120 minutes in a game in Europe on Thursday, they didn't show any signs of being tired and, surprisingly, appeared to become more energetic as the game progressed.

Villa took the lead in the 57th minute thanks to a beautiful team play that ended with winger Moussa Diaby scoring. Leon Bailey then scored 20 minutes later, which gave the hosts some extra breathing room.

The Villa team is now in fourth place in the standings and have created a distance of six points from Tottenham, who are in fifth place. However, Tottenham still has two games to play. Bournemouth, on the other hand, is ranked 13th.

Week Can Make A Huge Difference!

Aston Villa has had a great week of celebrations, especially considering that they only managed to earn one point from two league games at the start of the month.

The team achieved impressive victories over Arsenal and Lille recently. They also secured a spot in the major European semi-final for the first time since 1982, after winning in a penalty shootout. Their performance at Villa Park was commendable, which puts them in a favorable position to obtain a top-four position in the league.

The Villa team displayed a sense of serenity and composure right from the start of the game. They held onto the ball and gradually moved towards their opponents' half, but were unsuccessful in generating any significant chances to score.

Only when Rogers scored to level the game in the additional minutes of the first half did Villa manage to make a shot on goal.

Rogers is doing great at Villa Park ever since he joined from Middlesbrough. He scored his second goal in the league for the team in a really smart way- he calmly dodged Adam Smith's attempt to stop him and carefully aimed his shot, hitting it high above Neto's head.

As the second half commenced, Villa found their rhythm and began playing well. Ollie Watkins made two attempts to score a goal, but he ultimately set up Diaby to give the home team the lead.

The team led by Unai Emery kept pushing for another goal and their hard work was rewarded in the 78th minute. This was thanks to Watkins, who has the most assists in the Premier League with 12. He made a run into the box and passed the ball over to Bailey, who had an easy shot and scored.

In an interview with BBC Match of the Day post-match, Emery stated that the team put in a huge amount of effort as landing fifth place isn't going to bring them to the Champions League, especially given that other English teams have lost it. Therefore, their aim is to grab fourth place. To achieve this, they need to be highly demanding of themselves and ensure that they are well-prepared to perform well.

We need to be more attentive than we were previously, as we initially believed securing fifth place would guarantee us a spot in the Champions League. However, this is no longer the case given Tottenham's advantage with two additional matches to play. Additionally, it is imperative that we prioritize advancing to the semi-finals of the Conference League.

Emery noted that England's chances of getting a fifth spot in the Champions League are dimmed, as four of the remaining five English clubs have been knocked out of European competitions this week. This puts them behind Italy and Germany in the coefficient rankings, lowering their chances of being granted an extra qualifying spot in the Champions League.

Bournemouth's Office Woes: A Bad Day

Even though Bournemouth didn't have the ball for a long time during the first half, they were able to make the most of their possessions.

Justin Kluivert tried to score a goal by kicking the ball hard from outside the penalty box, and Emiliano Martinez had to stop it. Dango Ouattara also had a chance to score when he received a pass and got close to the goal, but he couldn't find the right angle and hit the side of the net instead.

Bournemouth's penalty was undoubtedly obvious, as Cash was completely thrown off balance by Kerkez's turn. Solanke then confidently scored, much like someone who has already scored 18 goals in the league.

Soon after Villa scored the first goal, Martinez prevented Ouattara from scoring up close, which could have shifted the game to Bournemouth's advantage.

Enes Unal, who came in as a replacement player, managed to score for the away team and put the ball inside the net. However, the goal was immediately disallowed due to an offside foul. Prior to this, Bailey had given Aston Villa a comfortable lead of two goals.

The journey to the Midlands may not have been pleasant for the coastal team, but there is still a chance for them to finish their season on an optimistic note with five games left to play.

Even though Bournemouth did not manage to win any of their first nine games under Andoni Iraola, they are only lacking five points from reaching a club record in the Premier League.

Iraola talked to BBC Match of the Day regarding Bournemouth's aim to break their club record for points in the Premier League by saying, "Our mission is to achieve this. The remaining fixtures in the season are extremely challenging, hence we need to perform exceptionally well. It is critical for us to stay alert and motivated and avoid errors against tough opponents."
