In the concluding moments of 2022, the worldwide populace surpassed the astounding milestone of eight billion individuals. Surprisingly, over fifty percent of this immense cohort currently dwell in urban environments.

Based on the most recent official censuses and forecasts, Visual Capitalist conducted a study to determine the largest cities in the world in terms of population. This analysis considered three commonly used criteria: city proper, which considers a city's population based on its administrative borders; urban area, which views cities as integrated and developed areas; and metropolitan area, which is similar to urban areas but is usually defined by official institutions.
