At a gathering held in Los Angeles, Nicole Kidman was presented with the American Film Institute's award for lifelong accomplishments, making her the initial Australian ever to earn this honor.

During the event, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Reese Witherspoon, and Keith Urban, who is Kidman's spouse, gave speeches.

Meryl Streep and Kidman acted together in The Hours. Meryl won the Life Achievement Award in 2004 which was presented to her by Kidman. Kidman made the audience laugh when she pretended to be proud and shared the difficulties of constantly being referred to as the best actress of her generation.

Streep recounted the circumstance when she encountered Kidman, who she described as exceptional, during their initial collaboration on the HBO show Big Little Lies. Streep acknowledged that Kidman did things that exceeded her abilities, making her realize how remarkable Kidman truly is.

Streep and Reese Witherspoon, who worked together on Big Little Lies, did really good Australian accents while impersonating Kidman. The audience found it hilarious.

Kidman was moved to tears by Streep's description of what she thought drove her.

According to Streep, individuals consider it courageous when an actress exposes herself completely and takes a leap of faith into uncharted territory, delving deep into the more obscure aspects of the human experience.

"I don't believe it's courage. Rather, I believe it's passion. I think she has a deep love for it."

During the evening, Kidman got emotional for the first time. Her spouse, singer Keith Urban, who is also an Australian, expressed how she demonstrated to him the true meaning of love through her actions when he struggled with substance abuse soon after their marriage in 2006.

"Three months into being married, I found myself in rehabilitation for four months," Urban stated, glancing over at Kidman who was seated on a platform beside their two daughters and other relatives.

Nic overcame all the pessimistic thoughts, including some that might have been her own, and made the decision to choose love. Now, nearly two decades later, we see the outcome of that choice.

According to Kidman, that night marked the premiere moment where her adolescent daughters had the opportunity to accompany her on a red carpet. Further, Kidman has two additional children from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise.

She received the AFI award at the identical location where she was bestowed with an Oscar in 2003 for her depiction of Virginia Woolf in The Hours.

In November 2022, it was declared that Kidman would be given an award that has been given out since 1973. The award has been received by great personalities like Orson Welles, Bette Davis, Alfred Hitchcock, Gene Kelly, Sidney Poitier, Barbara Streisand, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Denzel Washington and Julie Andrews in the past.

The event was originally planned for June 2023, but was postponed due to strikes in Hollywood. It is now set to be broadcasted on TNT on June 17th.

Kidman received Academy Award nominations for her performances in several films including Moulin Rouge, Rabbit Hole, Lion, and Being the Ricardos. The director, Aaron Sorkin, also gave her high praise during the ceremony.

During the ceremony, Kidman stated in a video that her role in the 1989 thriller "Dead Calm" led Cruise to notice her. This was the only mention of Cruise during the event.

She achieved fame in Hollywood through her role in Days of Thunder in 1990, where she acted alongside him. After their collaboration, they got married in the same year. She also appeared in two other films with him, Far and Away in 1992 and Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut in 1999.

Although Cruise and her parted ways in 2001, her fame continued to skyrocket. She landed some of her most significant parts and won an Academy Award later on.

The part that received the most praise during the awards ceremony on Saturday night was her performance in the musical section of Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge back in 2001.

During his live talk after the funny video, Freeman, who was chosen as the AFI honoree in 2011, sang a special version of the lyrics that Kidman performs in the movie from Elton John's hit song. He sang, "The world is more beautiful, now that you are here."
