Manchester airport power cut causes cancelled flights and ‘extreme disarray’

Manchester Airport

A sudden loss of power at Manchester airport has resulted in a large amount of flights being cancelled. Passengers scheduled to fly out of terminals one and two are being told not to come to the airport on Sunday.

In a message shared on Sunday morning, Manchester airport stated that a significant power outage in the region had led to extensive problems. This resulted in delays and cancellations of flights, as well as issues with loading luggage onto some flights.

Electricity was back on by 7.45am, but the airport announced that flights from terminals one and two were being axed. Passengers flying from those terminals were told to avoid coming to the airport until new information was provided.

Travelers flying from terminal three should arrive at the airport as usual unless told otherwise by their airline. However, they should be prepared for possible delays, the airport stated.

The post also mentioned that due to the power failure, there is a possibility that baggage may not be loaded onto departing flights. The company assured that they will collaborate with airlines to ensure that passengers receive their belongings promptly.

Passengers who were supposed to arrive at the airport were being sent to different airports instead, according to the announcement.

Issues with the electricity in the vicinity are believed to have impacted not only the airport but also other structures close by.

Pictures and videos shared on social networking sites displayed long lines of travelers waiting to check in for their flights, and disorder at baggage carousels as passengers who had just gotten off their flights tried to locate their belongings without any guidance.

The Manchester airport, which is the third most popular in the UK, stated that they are actively trying to quickly board passengers who are already at the airport onto their flights.

The travel guru Simon Calder noted that the operations at Manchester airport were in a state of chaos due to the power outage.

Most of the passengers will be at terminals one and two. There are large crowds of people, numbering in the thousands, who have been there since early morning with no flights departing, as reported to LBC.

He mentioned that the airport planned to direct airlines to "cancel a large number of flights for a few hours... in an attempt to resume normal operations later today."

He mentioned that individuals heading to the airport will likely receive a notification that their flight has been canceled.

Calder mentioned that there were just as many individuals waiting to return to Manchester who would also be left stranded because of the power outage.

All of this is occurring during the busiest time of year for air travel, with many flights fully booked. If there are a lot of cancellations, things could become chaotic, and passengers may have to wait several days to reach their destinations.

The list of flights leaving Manchester airport on Sunday morning had more than twelve cancellations, with several others running late. There were fewer issues with incoming flights, but still some cancellations and delays.
