Match Report: Leicester City 0 - 3 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Leicester City

On Sunday morning at King Power Stadium, Leicester City suffered a 3-0 defeat to Wolves. Goals from Goncalo Guedes, Rodrigo Gomes, and Matheus Cunha in the first half sealed the victory for the visitors, leaving the Foxes disappointed as they believed they had a chance to win the match.

It was a complete failure. There's really no doubt about it. The defense in the first half was simply not up to par. Wolves played decently and earned their points, but this loss was more about City’s own shortcomings than an outstanding effort from the opponents. I’m at a loss for words. That sums it up.

Who would have anticipated such a performance? Oh...exactly.

The loss means the Foxes now have 14 points from 17 games. We're sitting in 17th place in the standings, only two points clear of both Wolves and Ipswich Town. If we keep playing like this, we'll finish the season with 31 points, which isn't a good position to be in. Our next match is against league leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Boxing Day, followed by a home game against Manchester City in a week. Things could take a turn for the worse.

Leicester City lineup included: Danny Ward, James Justin (substituting with Hamza Choudhury in the 51st minute), Conor Coady, Jannik Vestergaard (substituted by Wout Faes at halftime), Victor Kristiansen, Boubakary Soumare, Oliver Skipp (replaced by Harry Winks at the start of the second half), Bilal El Khannouss (Bobby De Cordova-Reid came on in the 51st minute), Stephy Mavididi, Jordan Ayew (Facundo Buonanotte came in during the 84th minute), and Jamie Vardy serving as captain.

Wolverhampton Wanderers: Jose Sa, Santiago Bueno, Toti Gomes, Nelson Semedo, Andre, Joao Gomes, Rodrigo Gomes, Matt Doherty, Jorgen Strand Larsen, Matheus Cunha, Goncalo Guedes

Important Highlights and Observations

It’s a gloomy day on Filbert Way. Is this a crucial match with major implications? Definitely.

8' - You would have definitely placed a bet on Vardy to find the net in that situation. El Khannouss sent a long pass to Vardy, who was positioned just outside the box. The goalkeeper, Sa, rushed out, but Vardy managed to reach the ball before him. Luckily for the keeper, Vardy's touch didn't lift the ball over him, as that would have been an inevitable goal.

At the 12-minute mark, Soumare gives away a free kick on Leicester's left, right by the penalty spot. The chance goes to waste, primarily because of shoddy execution rather than any exceptional defending.

19’ - GOOOOAL! Where did that come from? A pass from the midfield flies over Vestergaard, who is assigned to mark Strand Larsen, and it lands perfectly for Guedes, who is free behind the defender. Coady arrives late for the cover, and Ward is caught off guard. The Wolves player makes an impressive acrobatic shot and scores!

24' - Justin makes a move inward and takes a shot from 27 yards out with his left foot. It wasn't the best choice.

25’ - So close! Skipp takes a quick free kick and spots Mavididi in an open area. However, Mavididi wasn’t expecting the pass, giving the defenders a chance to recover. The ex-Arsenal player moves in toward the center and attempts to curl the ball into the corner. Sa fumbles it but manages to collect it before any of the opposing players can pounce on the rebound.

36'- GOAL! Poor defending allows Wolves to increase their lead. Justin decides to leave a ball headed for the back post instead of playing it, which gives Rodrigo Gomes the opportunity to capitalize. His initial touch guides the ball past Ward.

It took a turn for the worse, Marc...

In the 42nd minute, it was so close! Mavididi aimed to pass to Vardy in the penalty area but misplaced it. Luckily, the ball ricocheted off a defender and landed at Vardy’s feet. With his back to the goal, he controlled the ball and took a shot. Although he managed to get it past Sa, Toti Gomes was there to clear it off the line.

44' – GOAL! The Wolves score effortlessly. Guedes sends a straightforward cross from the wing to Cunha, who is positioned deep in the penalty area. He takes a shot from a difficult angle and gets the better of Ward. Kristiansen and Soumare were caught off guard far too easily. The visitors extend their lead to 3-0.

In the 46th minute, Van Nistelrooy made two substitutions at halftime, replacing Skipp and Vestergaard with Harry Winks and Wout Faes.

In the first half, the commentators note that Wolves managed to score with all three of their shots on target, despite having an expected goals (xG) total of only 1.14. That’s pretty harsh.

53’ – The Foxes make two additional substitutions: Hamza Choudhury and Bobby De Cordova-Reid replace Justin and El Khannouss.

57’ - Almost there! A long pass reaches Vardy just in front of Sa. This time, he attempts to get around the goalkeeper, but his touch is too strong, leaving him with a difficult angle to shoot from.

69' - The Wolves are holding onto the ball nicely, and their fans are joyfully cheering "ole!" after each completed pass. Oof!

In the 76th minute, Winks sends in a beautiful cross, and Coady only has to extend his leg to nudge it into the goal. However, he fails to extend his leg and misses the chance to score.

79' – The fans from the City team are flooding out of the bleachers. It's difficult to fault them for doing so.

84' - Facundo Buonanotte replaces Jordan Ayew on the field.

85’ - Ward makes his first save of the day, stopping a shot from Joao Gomes.

92’ - Things are happening on the field. Leicester gets a few opportunities, but honestly, it doesn’t seem to matter right now.

94 minutes in, and that's the final whistle. Wolves win 3-0.
