The Oscars

Ah the Oscars! Hollywood's big night. Huge awards won. Mighty speeches had. Bigger fits dominating our Twitter feeds! But this year's awards ceremony felt a little different. Sure there were the usual black tie get-ups (Austin Butler in Saint Laurent), but there was something in the air in Tinsel Town on Sunday 12 March. The guys didn't just come to do Oscars night. They did prom night. They came to have fun. Big prom night peacocking. Hey Alexa! Whack on Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes' “I've Had the Time of My Life”.

We get it. Most (American) teens are conditioned to think that prom is the most important night of their lives. But did we really expect to see a mash-up of all the greatest and worst Hallmark movies in existence? Probably not. A lot Grease, a bit The Virgin Suicides high school dance and a little He's All That, it was like stepping onto an actual movie set.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the hardest, nicest guy in Hollywood, served up a deliciously soft fit for his go at taking the prom king crown. Dressed in Dolce and Gabbana, he slipped his pumped up biceps into a candy-floss-hued, hi-shine saccharine satin jacket, which he adorned with a pastel pink rose brooch. A bit Disney prince. Very Footloose and fancy-free. Top of the class!

Seth Rogen was there too, doing what Seth Rogen does best. Which is trying to get the prom king crown on his head, of course. He's been at it all awards season. And last night he rounded off a neat campaign trail of kingly pastel-hued fits with a nice cream tuxedo, grey slacks and fetching dickie bow tie combo. Patrick Swayze could never! Similarly, Samuel L Jackson gave the Oscars a little pizzaz by way of a pewter Giorgio Armani tuxedo jacket that simply sung to the tune of prom dance classic “Wonderful Tonight.”
