Eco-friendly Packaging: Paper Is Best

Plastic

Bonn University Studies Impact Of Packaging On Buying Desire

The University of Bonn and Forschungszentrum Jülich's study found German consumers like paper packaging. But, many don't believe in paper-based bottles. They asked 3,000 people from across Germany. The study's results are now in the journal "Food Quality and Preference."

Every year, people make almost 400 million tons of plastic. That's around the same weight as all the cars in Europe. They use about 40 percent of the plastic to make things like packaging for books, refrigerators, and drinks. But lots of it ends up as garbage or in nature. This makes climate change worse and uses up finite resources.

Janine Macht, a PhD student at the University of Bonn, suggests environmentally friendly plastic substitutes as a solution to the environmental concerns. These include plastics made from renewable sources like agricultural waste and paper-based packaging like ice cream cups. To see the consumers' acceptance level towards these options and how it varies with products being packed, the research was conducted.

Macht and colleagues looked at these things with Klink-Lehmann and Venghaus. They did a survey online with almost 3,000 people. They wanted to find people like the general population in terms of gender, age, and education. Venghaus now works at RWTH Aachen University.

Researchers studied three types of food - blueberries, butter, and vegetable oil. These foods were packaged in three different ways - traditional plastic, bioplastic, and paper-based. In total, there were nine packaging combinations for the food. The plastic container was at least recyclable.

The study asked people if they would buy things based on their packaging. Berries in a cardboard box were liked more than in a plastic basket. Vegetable oil in a bioplastic bottle was also popular. People think about packaging and what it's good for when buying food. Macht said this matters more than just being good for the environment.
