Millie Bobby Brown Addresses Comments About Her Accent Changing: “I’m Trying My Best”
Millie Bobby Brown is not happy with the remarks regarding the alteration in her accent that has been brought about by her prolonged stay in the United States.
During an interview with online personality Max Balegde, the Stranger Things actress talked about the online discussions regarding her apparent shift away from her British accent while living primarily in the United States.
Brown shared, "As an actor, I have grown up in the spotlight and America has been my home. When I arrive on set, I embrace my role and transform into the character I'm portraying. I aim to replicate the character's mannerisms and speech patterns to bring them to life on screen."
In the blog post, she discussed how the individuals she spends time with, such as her fiancé Jake Bongiovi who happens to be Jon Bon Jovi's offspring, can affect the way she talks. She clarified, though, that when she's in England, her true accent becomes more prominent.
When I'm in the company of my fiancé or people such as Jimmy Fallon who possess an American accent, I find myself naturally trying to emulate it, and the same goes for when I'm in England and want to sound more British. I don't do it with the intent to offend anyone, but rather it's just an instinctual response. I apologize if it bothers anyone, but please understand that I'm doing my best to adjust my speech patterns.
After Brown went on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon a few weeks ago, people on social media started to notice that during the interview, it seemed like she wasn't speaking with her usual British accent. This was particularly noticeable to fans of Damsel, the movie she starred in.
A TikTok user observed that the British accent of the person in the video has almost disappeared, and another user pointed out that even though some words are pronounced with a British accent, the overall rhythm and intonation resemble that of an American accent.
Meanwhile, certain individuals stood up for her, as one person expressed, "People with accents are frequently advised to enunciate clearly in order for others to comprehend them more easily. I don't believe she is relinquishing her accent; I surmise it's just for the interview."
