Senator Mike Lee expressed his sympathy to the family of Jimmy Carter after the former president passed away on Tuesday.
Surprisingly swift, it appears. Carter, who is 99 years old, is still alive.
Lee was tricked by a fake news story that was published on X by someone pretending to be from the "Office of Jimmy Carter."
The false statement used inappropriate language to talk about Carter's deceased wife, Roslyn. It included a made-up quote from the ex-president supposedly calling her a “bad girl” and the “original troublemaker” – slang terms for a woman who is assertive – and likening her bedroom skills to those of the late first lady Nancy Reagan.
The older senator from Utah doesn't seem to have fully read the statement before sharing on X from his personal @BasedMikeLee account that, "Former President Jimmy Carter has passed away. My condolences are with his family."
Lee removed the post shortly afterwards. His team did not provide a response when questioned about the senator's mistake.
The fake announcement ended with a false quote from Carter's son, Chip, claiming that the ex-president will be remembered fondly by not just his loved ones but also by both Americans and enemies worldwide who have benefited from his approach of promoting peace through diplomacy.
According to a report from Atlanta News First, The Carter Center has verified that the ex-president is still living. He is currently receiving hospice care in Georgia and is set to celebrate his 100th birthday on October 1st.
