Jimmy Carter Still Alive Amid Viral Death Hoax

The obituary made sarcastic comments about ex-President Jimmy Carter's presidency and made inappropriate remarks about past first ladies.

The Carter Center, a charity Carter started, informed PolitiFact that the letter is not real.

Despite what you may have seen on social media, former President Jimmy Carter is still living.

A false notice spreading rumors about the passing of the 99-year-old ex-president, filled with errors and humor, went viral on sites like social media. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah also shared the hoax, but has since taken it down.

The blog post, allegedly from the Office of Jimmy Carter, begins with a sense of truth. It claims that former President Jimmy Carter, known for his advocacy for human rights and democracy, his service in WWII, and his time as the 39th president of the United States, has died at the age of 99. The post states that he passed away in his home in Plains, Georgia on Tuesday, July 23 at 1:34 am.

However, as the letter continues, it changes into a form of humor. It mentions accomplishments like "betraying the United States to Panama" and "being too lenient on the Soviet Union" as successes in Carter's foreign policies.

The letter continues to include scandalous mentions of Carter's deceased spouse, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, and other women who held the title of first lady.

The blog post from July 23 contained a description of an image that labeled the letter as not genuine. It said, "Former President Carter is alive and receiving hospice care. This was a test to see how easily people believe exaggerated headlines."

The Carter Center, a charity started by Carter, confirmed to PolitiFact that the ex-president is still living.

The Carter Center's media office sent an email to PolitiFact stating that the letter is not true. They clarified that there have been no announcements or changes.

Carter was president from 1977 to 1981, and in February 2023, he started receiving hospice care. In June, his grandson Jason Carter said to Southern Living that the former president's condition had not changed since he entered hospice.

Carter, who is 99 years old, is still alive, making him the oldest former U.S. president. He holds the record for being the longest-lived president in U.S. history. The rumor that he passed away is not true.
