Following a heavily criticized rendition of the U.S. national anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby, country singer Ingrid Andress issued an apology on Tuesday, attributing her performance to being under the influence of alcohol.
"I am entering a treatment center today to receive the support I require," she wrote on social media. "The person who performed last night was not representative of who I am. I am sorry to MLB, all the supporters, and this nation that I hold dear for my behavior."
The spokesperson for Major League Baseball, Matt Bourne, declined to provide a statement. Andress' representative stated that no further comments will be given at this moment.
Andress, who is 32 years old, is the child of Brad Andress, a previous strength and conditioning coach for Major League Baseball teams such as the Detroit Tigers, Colorado Rockies, and New York Mets.
Ingrid Andress has received four Grammy nominations, one of them being for Best New Artist in 2021.
On Monday evening, Andress confidently performed an a cappella rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," a very difficult song to sing. Videos of her not so well-received performance at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, have since been shared widely on social media.
Andress started off as a songwriter in Nashville before she secured a contract for her original music. She dropped her first album in 2020 and followed it up with a second album in 2022. Recently, she has been hyping up a new single on social media that is set to come out next week.
This is not the first instance of a national anthem performance receiving harsh criticism. In the realm of controversial renditions of the national anthem at sports events, notable examples include Roseanne Barr's performance at a 1990 San Diego Padres game and Fergie's at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game, both of which were met with similar negative reactions.
Texas-born country singer Cody Johnson will be singing the national anthem at the upcoming All-Star Game on Tuesday night.
