When discussing the series, Ben Wheatley, the creator, writer, and director, explained, "It falls within the horror genre, but it also resembles a disaster film. It focuses on the characters and their responses to the impending disaster occurring just outside the town of Dambury."
It brings to mind the impact of Covid, as well as elements from classic zombie films, and resonates with works like The Crazies and Threads, among others.
"I was thrilled to organize it around various generations, allowing for different viewpoints to come together and engage with each other throughout the narrative."
Wheatley discussed the significant role that Covid-19 played in shaping Generation Z. He remarked, "We had nearly defined Generation Z in 2019, but everything changed with the arrival of Covid. What seemed like science fiction suddenly became our reality, which was quite strange."
"It was set aside for a while, but after I worked on The Meg 2, it came back to my mind. About a year after the lockdown, we began to realize that it felt more significant than it had in the past..."
Generation Z will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Sunday, October 27th, starting at 9 PM.
