Anna Maxwell Martin expressed that she experienced a sense of 'financial panic' after her ex-husband passed away, worrying about how it would affect the emotional health of their children.
The actress, who gained fame from her performances in BBC series Motherland and Line Of Duty, was heartbroken by the unexpected passing of director Roger Michell in 2021. This tragedy occurred just a year after they revealed their split.
Martin, 47, acknowledges that her initial response was to safeguard their two daughters, Maggie, 15, and Nancy, 13, as they navigated a possibly unstable financial situation.
In an interview with BBC Women's Hour, she shared, "My husband passed away three years ago, and it made everything in our lives quite challenging."
One important aspect of grief is that it often brings a heavy burden of financial stress. Alongside this, there are practical concerns, especially regarding your children's well-being and mental health, which becomes your main focus.

The actress, renowned for her performances in BBC series such as Motherland and Line of Duty, was heartbroken following the unexpected passing of filmmaker Roger Michell in 2021 (shown in a photo from 2008).
She mentioned, "When I reflect on it, I realize I was likely in shock and fear, feeling extremely on edge for quite a while, until just recently."
Michell, a renowned filmmaker known for his work on films such as Notting Hill, Enduring Love, and the BBC series The Buddha Of Suburbia, passed away at the age of 65 on September 22, 2021, due to reasons that have not been made public.
However, Martin, who is now promoting her new show "Until I Kill You," feels that the loss of her father, Ivan Martin, when she was 24, has helped her handle the grief of losing her former husband.
She mentioned, “I’ve already walked this path of sorrow and unexpected loss. I’ve experienced it in the past, so in a sense, I’m able to gather myself and face it once more.”
Watching my children go down that path was truly painful, but I consider myself quite resilient and capable. I like to think I'm skilled at managing life's challenges. I kept reminding myself, "I just have to keep pushing forward."
She shared, "When it happened to me for the first time at 24, I felt incredibly lonely. I felt completely isolated since no one around me had experienced what I was going through. I didn't know anyone who could relate."
When it happened with Rog, my perspective shifted to thinking, "We need to stay strong for the children."
I believe that reaching your 40s as a woman brings a unique perspective. By this point in life, if you're fortunate, you will have gathered a close circle of wonderful friends and supportive individuals.

Martin and Michell declared their split in 2020, shortly before he sadly passed away the next year (shown in the photo from September 2021).
"You'll have moved past making errors in that part of your life. I truly did; I had amazing friends and a fantastic support system."
In an interview with The Sunday Times in June, Martin shared that she and her daughters faced even more sorrow due to the indifference shown by those around them.
The Line Of Duty star shared that some people would go out of their way to avoid them and would steer clear of discussing Roger's passing. She expressed that she felt sympathy for those individuals and believed they had made a mistake by lacking any sensitivity.
She mentioned, "We often make general claims like 'We're doing much better now,' but I haven't seen proof of that. Schools definitely haven't improved."
There are also people who approach me as if everything is perfectly normal. We've encountered quite a bit of that. Thankfully, the girls are really good at handling things, so they’ll often mention their dad when we talk. However, even people from Roger's generation, those who are around my age, struggle to bring up his death.
She added, "People often struggle to confront pain, loss, or tough situations. It's something I find quite strange. Is it a cultural issue? I'm thankful that I'm not like that because when those moments occur, I can't help but feel pity for them."
You've made a mistake. I understand that you might be feeling anxious, but it's important to express concern by asking someone, "How are you doing? Was that tough for you? How are you feeling right now?"
In a June interview with The Sunday Times, the actress discussed how her and her daughters' sorrow was made even more difficult by the insensitivity of those around them (seen in the 2022 photo).
Since 2022, Martin has been in a relationship with Ferdy Unger-Hamilton, a wealthy music executive aged 52. He characterized Ferdy as someone who is 'very sensible, steady, reliable, and pragmatic' (see photo from 2017).
Martin emphasized the significance of discussing a loved one who has passed away, describing it as "extremely important." He shared, "I understand the value, but I still want to hear stories about how much Roger meant to others and how incredibly talented he was."
She emphasized how important it was for her daughters to have access to the extensive archive footage of their father.
She mentioned, "It's crucial. When my dad passed away, I quickly lost the memory of his voice. After two decades, I stumbled upon a recording and heard him again. It was jarring and incredibly difficult."
"My daughters are always thinking about their dad, but they don’t have that overwhelming realization. They can connect with him whenever they feel like it. I frequently go online to listen to Roger."
