Former journalist Huw Edwards from the BBC has been accused by London's Metropolitan police of possessing inappropriate pictures of children.

The experienced news anchor, who left his job at the BBC in April after working there for 40 years, was taken into custody by the Metropolitan Police in London last November. He was officially accused of a crime on June 26th.

He is charged with three counts connected to alleged crimes involving inappropriate images shared on a WhatsApp group chat from December 2020 to April 2022. He is scheduled to appear in Westminster magistrates' court on Wednesday.

A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police stated that Huw Edwards, a 62-year-old resident of Southwark, London, has been accused of creating three illegal images involving children after an investigation by the Met police.

"The crimes, which are said to have occurred from December 2020 to April 2022, involve pictures exchanged on a WhatsApp group," the representative stated.

Edwards, the highest-paid newsreader at the BBC, was in the spotlight last summer amidst a media storm following reports of potential inappropriate relationships between a mystery BBC presenter and young individuals.

His spouse, Vicky Flind, finally revealed that the person accused in the scandal was actually her husband. She also shared that he was dealing with severe mental health problems.

Edwards, who hosted the BBC's popular News at Ten show for twenty years, was admitted to the hospital last summer due to the scandal. At first, police determined that he had not committed any criminal offenses.

The BBC has been criticized for its handling of the situation and whether it should have taken further action to look into the allegations against Edwards sooner.

The BBC said sorry to the family of the young person who was involved in the accusations against Edwards. This happened after the BBC looked into how well their procedures for handling complaints were working.

The study carried out by Deloitte revealed that there is a requirement for more uniformity throughout the BBC in the way complaints are handled.
