BBC apologises over handling of Huw Edwards complaint
The BBC made a statement to express regret for how they dealt with a reported issue involving Huw Edwards, the presenter.
Claims regarding his conduct were raised in May of 2023, however, it wasn't brought to the attention of higher-up executives until July 6th.
The company declared that they did not handle the issue promptly enough and as a result, they have made modifications to their methods.
The BBC's complaints handling process was investigated by Deloitte in a report, which revealed that a family of a minor reported a complaint on May 18.
According to the report, there was an error in the logging of the case and there was no formal procedure documented to investigate the allegations further.
According to the Deloitte report, the family's first point of contact should have been passed on to the corresponding regional operations security manager. However, this wasn't done.
The person who made the complaint was directed to audience services the day after their complaint.
However, the matter was not recorded on the BBC's case management system, thereby depriving the opportunity for wider dissemination of the case throughout the BBC.
The report stated that there was no recorded procedure for communicating with the person raising a concern and/or checking back with them later.
The BBC stated that it has already enhanced its procedure for dealing with non-editorial complaints. However, it intends to implement additional measures to ensure that consistency is achieved across all teams, despite the manner in which the complaints are submitted and analyzed.
The blog post additionally mentioned utilizing technology to guarantee that all instances are thoroughly recorded and assessed.
The BBC News anchor was accused by The Sun newspaper of offering money to a minor in exchange for explicit pictures of themselves.
Mrs. Vicky Flind, who accused her husband Huw Edwards of being involved in the controversy, announced on 13 July that Edwards would give a response when his physical condition improved.
