Polling Day in the 2024 UK General Election – all you need to know | Stirling Council

General election 2024

We have created a brief handbook that includes important reminders for polling day, such as the necessity of presenting a photo ID at polling locations.

In the upcoming election, Scottish voters will need to bring ID when they go to vote at a polling station for the first time. Be sure to have a valid photo ID or Voter Authority Certificate with you before heading to the polling place.

Valid types of photo identification include a passport, driver's license, senior citizen or handicapped individual's bus pass, and Young Scot card.

People who want to vote can still use their expired identification as long as they still look the same in the photo. You can find the complete list of accepted identification at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID

If you show up at a voting location without a valid photo ID, they will request that you come back with an acceptable form of identification.

If you prefer to keep your photo ID confidential, there will be a designated space where it can be checked in private. This could be a separate room or a screened-off area, depending on the location of the voting site.

To see a video about different types of identification you can use to vote in Scotland, please visit our YouTube channel.

You can find Voter ID requirement information in different formats on the Electoral Commission website. This includes audio, Braille, BSL, easy read, and plain text. Just visit www.electoralcommission.org.uk/resources/democratic-engagement-resources/voter-id-resources-generic.

Voting locations will be available for people to cast their ballots from 7 in the morning until 10 at night on Thursday, July 4th.

When you cast your vote in person, you must go to the designated polling location that corresponds with your home address.

Make sure to verify the location of your polling place before heading out to vote. It may not be the nearest one to your home, and it could have been relocated since your last visit. You must go to the designated polling place assigned to you and cannot simply go to a different one, even if it's closer to your workplace.

The location where you can vote will be listed on your voter registration card, which you should have gotten in the mail a couple of weeks before Election Day.

You can discover the whereabouts of every polling station in the Stirling and Strathallan area by clicking on the following link.

To know what to expect when you go to vote at a polling station, you can check out this video from the Electoral Commission as a helpful guide.

All mail-in ballots in the Stirling and Strathallan district have been successfully received.

After receiving a postal vote, a voter must use this option to submit their vote for the election. To stop receiving postal votes, the voter must have made the request before 5pm on Wednesday, June 19th.

During the election day on 4 July, voters can choose to drop off their filled out postal pack at any polling place in the Stirling and Strathallan area or at the reception area at Old Viewforth, Stirling, from 7am to 10pm.

People can also have someone else submit their ballot pack for them. Each voter can submit up to five postal ballots in addition to their own. Those submitting postal votes will need to fill out a form when doing so.

For postal voters who have not gotten their postal vote yet, the only option is to ask for a new one from the Returning Officer.

In order to make a new postal vote, voters must visit Old Viewforth in Stirling between 9am and 5pm by Thursday July 4. They can collect the replacement ballot and fill it out there. To speed up the process, voters can call ahead at 01786 233068. Remember to bring identification showing your name and address.

The person you have chosen to represent you will need to visit your designated polling location to vote on your behalf.

They would have been sent a proxy voting card, informing them of the location and time for voting on your behalf.

During the UK Parliament elections, your proxy will be required to present their own photo identification when casting a vote at the polling station on your behalf.

You are allowed to cast your vote in person if you have a proxy vote, but it must be done before your proxy submits their vote on your behalf.
