Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez recorded Argentina's players singing an offensive chant directed at France following their win at the Copa America.
Argentina's team members were rejoicing on their bus after their 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final on Sunday night.
Fernandez was recording a video on the bus, which was being live streamed on Instagram. The midfielder ended the video shortly after the players of Argentina's team began singing.
In the 2022 World Cup, some fans from Argentina sang a chant that was both racist and transphobic. The chant claimed that the players from France were all from Angola and included a disrespectful mention of Kylian Mbappe's reported relationship with transgender model Ines Rau.
While Fernandez was live on air, the players from Argentina could be heard singing a few lines from a song about having French nationality and playing in France. But just as they started to sing, someone interrupted and said to stop the video.
Here we see Enzo Fernandez and his fellow Argentina players celebrating their victory in the Copa America by singing a chant that was deemed racist during the 2022 World Cup in France.
Here are the complete lyrics of the song: 'Pay attention, tell others, they perform in France, but they hail from Angola, they will perform excellently, they have a preference for being intimate with transgender individuals, their mother is Nigerian, their father is Cameroonian, but their nationality is listed as French on their passport.'
Fernandez, who is 23 years old, is on the same team as a number of French players of African descent at Chelsea. These players include Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto, Christopher Nkunku and Lesley Ugochukwu.
Chelsea acquired the Argentine midfielder from Benfica for a hefty sum of €121 million (£106.8m) in January 2023.
Fernandez will be showing up late for Chelsea’s pre-season practices because he is playing in the Copa America tournament this summer.
The Football Federation of Argentina has not confirmed the existence of the video showing their players singing the chant while celebrating on the bus.
