Chelsea have started an internal process to address a situation where Wesley Fofana criticized a video posted by teammate Enzo Fernandez on social media, calling it "uninhibited racism."
Fernandez said sorry for sharing a video showing Argentina football team members singing chants that were called "racially offensive and discriminatory" by the French football federation. The FFF plans to report this to Fifa.
Fofana shared a video from his teammate on social media with the caption: "Racism in football in the future."
The cheers happened after Argentina won the Copa America final against Colombia. Midfielder Fernández, who is 23 years old, said sorry on Instagram.
Fernandez stated that the song had very disrespectful words and there is no justification for using them. He strongly opposes all types of discrimination and regrets getting carried away during the Copa America celebrations. He emphasized that the video, the moment, and the words used do not represent who he is as a person or what he believes in. Fernandez sincerely apologizes for his actions.
Chelsea have officially announced that they will be starting an investigation into Fernandez's conduct.
Chelsea Football Club strongly condemns any type of discriminatory behavior, calling it completely unacceptable. The club declared that they are proud to be an inclusive and diverse team that welcomes individuals from all walks of life, cultures, and backgrounds.
We recognize and are grateful for our player's public apology and will take this chance to educate. The team has started an internal disciplinary process.
After Argentina won against France in the World Cup final in 2022, some fans were said to have sung chants to celebrate the victory.
The French Football Federation (FFF) issued a statement expressing their strong condemnation of the offensive comments, which go against the principles of fair play and equality. The FFF's president has decided to take action by contacting the Argentine Football Association and FIFA directly, as well as initiating legal proceedings for the derogatory and discriminatory remarks.
