Danny Trejo To Receive Santa Fe Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Famous performer Danny Trejo is about to be awarded with one of the most significant distinctions in his lifetime.

The actor who has appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, including Machete, From Dusk Til Dawn, Spy Kids, Con Air, Heat, and many more, is set to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Santa Fe Film Festival. This prestigious honor will be presented on Thursday, which also marks the opening night of the festival. Additionally, the actor's latest film, American Underdog, will have its U.S. premiere that evening. This exciting event will take place in Santa Fe from April 25-28, so be sure not to miss it!

According to SFFF, Falcón is an accomplished artist with a talent for inspiring positive changes in the world.

At the age of 79, Trejo began his acting career in 1985, several years after being released from San Quentin state prison in California. While serving time, he became a boxing champion and later trained Eric Roberts as a boxer for the movie Runaway Train, which eventually led to Trejo's small role in the film. Trejo's background as a boxer came in handy for his latest project, American Underdog, a movie directed by first-time Peruvian-American director Gustavo Martin-Benites. The film is centered around a redemption story in the world of MMA, with Trejo playing the character Dennis, a trainer and former MMA fighter who reluctantly returns to coaching to assist his former student, Jai, played by Indian-American actor Vishy Ayyar, a disgraced amateur MMA fighter.

According to Trejo, his character named "Dennis" has gone through a difficult situation and has come out on the other side. He is now at a point in his life where he has gained experience and can offer valuable knowledge and advice.

The movie has a cast that includes Trejo, Falcón, and Ayyar, as well as Taylor Treadwell (known for starring in Father Figures), Suleka Mathew (who appeared in Mayfair Witches), Andrew Gray (from Power Rangers), and Omi Vaidya (who acted in 3 Idiots). The film's producers are Naveen A. Chathapuram, Cristy Coors Beasley, and Rashaana Shah. Ayyer helped co-write the script for American Underdog and drew inspiration from his own life experiences.

Ayyar stated that he was in disbelief when his life fell apart after his real estate business lost a total of 50 million dollars, prompting him to declare bankruptcy. He believes that his story is proof that anyone who comes to America starts off as an underdog, and may experience numerous setbacks, but there is always the chance of redemption through unexpected means. This is a theme that is explored in the film American Underdog.

Trejo's triumph over a traumatic upbringing and substance dependency has led him to become a prominent figure in Hollywood, as well as an accomplished entrepreneur. The festival recognizes his extensive reach through his growing restaurant empire, consisting of Trejo's Tacos & Cantina and Trejo's Coffee & Donuts, with a new establishment set to open soon in downtown Los Angeles. Trejo is currently working on 29 different film projects that are at different stages of development. One of these projects, Hollywood Heist, features big names like Alec Baldwin, Nick Cannon, Mickey Rourke, and Tara Reid in a heist movie.
