"Mastering The Game: How To Play Wordle"
Wordle is incredibly straightforward. The goal is to figure out the right five-letter word within six attempts. After each guess, the letters will change color: green if they’re in the right position, yellow if they’re in the word but in the wrong spot, and grey if they’re not in the word at all.

The Origins Of Wordle: How It All Started
Wordle started as a small family game designed by software engineer Josh Wardle. He came up with the idea so he and his partner could enjoy an entertaining word game together during the pandemic. They soon recognized that this straightforward guessing game had a unique charm. After making some enhancements, Wardle launched it to the public on his website, Power Language.
The game launched in October 2021 and quickly gained popularity, reaching two million daily users by the end of that year. Its success can be attributed largely to how easily players could post their results on Twitter and other social media without giving away any spoilers. In January 2022, Wardle agreed to sell Wordle to the New York Times for a substantial amount. Congratulations to Mr. Wardle on this achievement!
Are There Any Forbidden Wordle Words?
You can enter almost any five-letter word in English as a guess in Wordle, and it will be accepted. However, the daily solution comes from a smaller selection of more frequently used five-letter words. While there are still thousands of potential answers, it ensures that you won't encounter rarely used words like "THIOL," "CAIRD," or "MALIC" (which are indeed actual words).
Sometimes, the New York Times opts not to use certain words as the answer for the day's Wordle, possibly due to their connection to current events or political issues. For instance, shortly after the news emerged about the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade in the U.S., they replaced the word "FETUS" with "SHINE" for March 30th. This decision was made because "fetus" was considered too sensitive given the surrounding circumstances.
The New York Times makes sure that what they view as offensive words never appear as solutions in Wordle puzzles. However, you can still use any inappropriate words as your guesses, provided they are legitimate words found in the dictionary. Just remember, those words will never be the correct answer.
Is Wordle Becoming Too Easy For You?
If you're finding Wordle a bit too simple lately, there are several options to up the challenge. One effective method is to activate Hard Mode. To do this, head to the Wordle website and click on the gear icon in the upper right corner of the page. When you enable Hard Mode, any letters that are highlighted in your guesses will have to be included in all your subsequent attempts. This makes it more difficult to rely on the strategy of selecting two words, such as "OUNCE" and "PAINS," to quickly check all five vowels at the beginning of the game.
You can raise the challenge level by adopting what we refer to as "Ultra-Hard" rules. This means that each guess you make has to be a plausible answer. For instance, if you were playing on Hard Mode and guessed "MOIST," with the "O" highlighted in yellow, you could still choose "POLAR" as your next word, even though it’s clear the "O" can’t be in that position. However, under the "Ultra-Hard" rules, that's not permitted. You need to follow every hint and ensure that each word you input could potentially be the correct answer.
If you find that Wordle is becoming too simple for you, there are plenty of other Wordle-like games available online that have emerged in the last year. One of our top picks is Worldle, where you have to identify a country based on its outline. Then there's Waffle, which involves rearranging letters in an already filled grid to create valid words; Moviedle, which plays a brief clip from a movie and asks you to guess the title within six attempts; and Quordle, which challenges you to solve four Wordle puzzles simultaneously using the same guesses.
