West Ham thrash Freiburg to reach quarter-finals
West Ham achieved another victory as they beat Freiburg in the Europa League quarter-finals. This result was thanks to the incredible performance of Mohammed Kudus, who scored two crucial goals in the final moments of the game.
West Ham achieved their greatest European triumph by easily defeating Freiburg, which allowed them to overcome their initial disadvantage and move on to their third consecutive quarter-final.
Prior to the match, David Moyes brought up the recollections of their victorious comeback against Sevilla at the parallel phase of the tournament two years back - and this instance, the head coach of the Hammers accomplished a comparable result.
However, unlike the previous match with the Spanish team, where the audience was anxious and victory was only secured during extra-time, this time West Ham had the victory secured within the first hour of the match against an underperforming Freiburg team.
Lucas Paqueta managed to score a goal to make the score even in the game only nine minutes after it started. He was not marked by any players and succeeded in turning the ball into the net from very close range with a small touch after Tomas Soucek made a flick with his head near the post.
Jarrod Bowen continued his impressive performance this season by scoring his 18th goal of the campaign just after 30 minutes, which gave West Ham the lead in the total score.
Experienced defender Aaron Cresswell managed to score his first goal in almost two years when the opposing team's defence failed to apply enough pressure and allowed him ample room to shoot.
The competition had ended, but Mohammed Kudus still had the opportunity to make a difference. He scored two goals in the last 15 minutes, leading West Ham to their most significant victory since Moyes took over as manager in December 2019.
Under the guidance of Moyes, they have managed to win an astonishing 26 times in European competitions, spanning across three campaigns. Prior to this run, they had only managed to achieve a total of 25 European victories, which included their success in the Intertoto Cup.
On Friday noon, they will find out the team they will be playing against in the quarter-finals.
Bowen Asserts England's Candidacy
One aspiring English player, Kalvin Phillips, had a tough day when he was excluded from both Gareth Southgate's team and David Moyes' starting squad in just three short hours. Nevertheless, Bowen persevered and created a compelling argument for his inclusion in the Euro 2024 roster.
Bowen was unable to compete in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar because he had a rough patch leading up to the tournament, which carried over into the Premier League season. Nevertheless, his fortunes turned around in 2022-23, culminating in a moment of great joy when he made the decisive goal in the Europa Conference League final, earning his team a spot in their third straight European campaign.
Surprisingly, he scored his first goal in Europe this season during the first half.
Bowen's role expanded to make room for Michail Antonio's comeback, but he was clever enough to dash across the field, pushing aside one defender and shooting a left-footed ball into the bottom corner.
He has done it many times this season, and he's been excellent in a central attacking role too. It's hard to imagine Southgate leaving him out of the group that goes to Germany.
Bowen's skillset goes beyond simply scoring goals. The player who used to be a part of Hull City shows incredible dedication and is known for putting the needs of the team before his own.
The person who is 27 years old gave the opportunity for Cresswell to score a goal by providing the assist. Cresswell took a moment to control the ball before he was able to shoot it into the goal. This was the first occasion since April of 2022 that Cresswell was able to score a goal.
Following his dismissal during the Europa League semi-finals against Eintracht Frankfurt two years ago, and subsequently being a substitute in the Europa Conference League final last season, 34-year-old Cresswell has greater motivation than most to make a significant contribution this campaign.
Kudus hasn't been showing up consistently this season, but his two goals towards the end of the game were outstanding.
He made an impressive move during the game with Freiburg where he skillfully dribbled the ball down the center of the field, leaving the opposing team helpless as they failed to block him. With two players already defeated, he finished the play with a beautifully curled shot that earned him a well-deserved goal. His celebration was just as remarkable as his performance, as he grabbed a plastic stool to take a seat in triumphant celebration.
The next goal was a rocket that absolutely no one could expect goalkeeper Noah Atubolu from Freiburg to stop.
Moyes Shines In Successful Night
It was a night that left you questioning the uproar surrounding Moyes and his tenure at West Ham.
The Scottish football player made a daring decision and by including Antonio in the game, he gave the opposing team's defense a challenge they were unable to handle.
Just like the previous blog mentioned, Bowen and Kudus did a great job towards the sides of the field. Paqueta, on the other hand, moved skillfully in open areas and inflicted significant harm on the opposition.
At the end of the game, Moyes expressed his appreciation for all the sections of the stadium, as the West Ham supporters were present in large numbers despite the match being scheduled for an early kick-off. The supporters of West Ham reciprocated the appreciation.
Things haven't always been this way. The team had been struggling for eight games without a victory, which included a humiliating 6-0 defeat at home against Arsenal. After that, things looked grim for the manager, with a "Moyes Out" banner being displayed by away fans during a loss to Nottingham Forest. However, the tables turned with a 4-2 win against Brentford three weeks ago.
Yet, the evening was a pleasant experience for all and there are more enjoyable moments to anticipate. This will surely factor into Moyes' contemplation of his future after the season's conclusion.
