West Ham roar past Freiburg with Kudus’s dazzling double the highlight
The conversation regarding the fate of David Moyes has a new topic of discussion.
Fans who want Moyes to leave at the end of the season need to reevaluate their stance. After West Ham's successful run into the quarter-finals of European competition for three seasons in a row, they were defeated with Mohamed Kudus scoring two impressive solo goals.
Did you find it enjoyable? West Ham put on an impressive performance against Freiburg and showed their commitment to the Europa League by securing a 5-1 victory overall after a fantastic comeback. Moyes should be given credit for his bold choices, as he wasn't playing it safe when he decided to utilize Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paquetá to attack Freiburg's defensive line.
Using a more aggressive formation could fix the negative outcome of losing 1-0 in the first game. Michail Antonio took the place of James Ward-Prowse and provided a clear target up front. Bowen, who returned to the right, put pressure on Freiburg's defense. And thanks to Tomás Souček and Edson Álvarez, Paquetá - who mainly played on the left throughout the season - was able to control the game from the center.
Moyes expressed great satisfaction with the team's performance and achievement. He was not satisfied with their performance in the first game, so they had to rectify it. The fact that West Ham has made it to the quarter-finals for three consecutive years is a remarkable feat that may not have been previously accomplished in the club's history. Clearly, the club has grown and improved significantly.
At the beginning of the match, West Ham came out strong and put pressure on Freiburg. Bowen took a quick shot that Noah Atubolu had to block. After only nine minutes, Freiburg's lead vanished. Aaron Cresswell took a corner kick, which Soucek redirected, and Paquetá scored a goal after slipping past Vincenzo Grifo's defense.
Freiburg didn't feel motivated by the weak marking they faced, despite Roland Sallai almost scoring a goal to level the game. West Ham showed their strength and controlled most of the match. Kudus had a chance to score from an opportunity set up by Antonio, but missed. The second goal for West Ham came in the 32nd minute when Christian Gunter fell to the ground trying to foul Bowen. Bowen ended up scoring his 18th goal of the season with a shot from 25 yards that swiftly went into the net.
Freiburg got motivated after falling behind in the match for the first time. The atmosphere shifted as Lukasz Fabiański prevented Grifo and Maximilian Eggestein from scoring before the end of the first half.
These starting points brought to mind why Moyes usually prefers a more cautious strategy. Freiburg managed to find gaps in our defense too often. West Ham will use their experience to decide when to defend and when to attack.
As an example, their fourth score demonstrated this perfectly. After a period of Freiburg holding the ball, Kudus received it and started a run from his own half. He charged through the center and skillfully evaded the final defender before calmly defeating Atubolu.
Kudus is displaying an incredible level of strength and talent that cannot be stopped. His unique style of dribbling is exceptional and highlights his abilities. Additionally, there is diversity in his skill set. Kudus scored another goal with a strong left-foot shot from a distance of 20 yards, further showcasing his impressive performance with a score of 5-0.
After 52 minutes, West Ham had a stronger hold on the match. Bowen's cross was deflected and ended up with Cresswell. The experienced left-back, who was dismissed twice during West Ham's Europa League journey two years prior, managed to send a shot into the far corner.
Moyes substituted Paquetá after he sustained an injury in the first half and had completed his tasks. The Brazilian midfielder in the West Ham team appeared to be extremely angry when he rested on the bench.
Paquetá has returned from a calf injury that kept him out for a while, which is the reason why Moyes made the decision to keep him safe. It was a wise decision since West Ham is chasing an additional Champions League spot in hopes of surpassing Germany. Paquetá's creativity will be essential if West Ham wishes to finish the season on a high note.
