Moyes gives West Ham 'half a chance' in Leverkusen tie
Jonas Hofmann was substituted into the game and managed to overcome West Ham's defense.
David Moyes is confident that West Ham still has a chance of winning the series, despite losing the first match against Bayer Leverkusen due to two goals in the final minutes.
With only seven minutes left on the clock, Jonas Hofmann managed to score for Xabi Alonso's team by shooting the ball through a group of players following an unsuccessful attempt by the opposing team to clear a corner.
In the very last minute of the game, Victor Boniface scored another goal for the team by expertly heading the ball into the net from a cross by Hofmann. This allowed the team to further cement their lead.
The team led by Alonso had control of the ball for most of the game, but they struggled to score due to the excellent and well-structured defence of the Hammers. However, Hofmann's late move changed the outcome.
Moyes stated to TNT Sports that there is a decent possibility of winning in the second part of the game.
It will require some effort as they are a highly skilled team. The outcome is unpredictable.
"First, let's aim to secure one, and if possible, double up. Our focus is to prepare for next week and garner support from the audience."
During most of the game, the guests demonstrated remarkable control by reducing Leverkusen's opportunities, as well as posing a danger during counterattacks thanks to the agility and strength of Michail Antonio.
According to most observers, Antonio came up with the optimal chance of the opening half when he dashed down the left flank and set up Mohammed Kudus. However, Kovar, the goalkeeper for Leverkusen, was able to save the Ghanaian winger's shot because it was directed directly at him.
West Ham had to rely on Lukasz Fabianski to make some excellent saves in order to prevent Leverkusen from scoring for an extended period of time.
The goalkeeper, who is 38 years old, made an excellent save to prevent Patrick Schick from scoring during the first half. Later on, he jumped to redirect a header by the same striker and managed to tip it over the goal post, even though he had initially positioned himself in the wrong spot.
Hofmann finally managed to score a goal against Fabianski and when Boniface headed in the second goal, Leverkusen was guaranteed the win and stretched their unbeaten streak to 42 games.
Hammers Face Tough Task After Late Setback
From the beginning, it was clear that David Moyes had a specific approach in mind. Rather than push forward aggressively, West Ham opted to defend their own half, causing annoyance for the opposing team and seeking chances to counter-attack when available.
They almost flawlessly executed their plan, as Leverkusen was unable to generate any distinct opportunities within the initial 60 minutes or so.
Moyes expressed his desire to have played more aggressive. He also acknowledged that the players executed the strategy with excellence.
"However, we competed against a team that plays in the Champions League and we still have some work to do to reach that standard."
In the end, the stress had an impact and the Hammers have to put an end to the German team's undefeated streak - and they have to do it impressively - in order to advance.
Antonio was a constant troublemaker and posed a significant challenge for defender Jonathan Tah, but this could motivate them, while having Jarrod Bowen recover for the next game would benefit the team greatly.
This is especially significant because Emerson Palmieri and Lucas Paqueta will be unable to play due to them receiving yellow cards and subsequent suspensions.
Moyes stated that we must acknowledge the opposition we are facing and put forth an outstanding effort to achieve a positive outcome.
West Ham made an impressive comeback in the last round by defeating a German team after losing in the first leg.
It will be challenging to achieve a repetition, although everything is not hopeless. If they manage to score the initial goal at London Stadium in the upcoming week, the Hammers team will swiftly regain its faith, as it is becoming more tactful in playing in Europe.
Late Again: Leverkusen's Last-minute Win
The leading team of the top tier of German football has developed a pattern of scoring goals in the final moments of matches this season. In the last 16 round, they managed to score two goals during the extra time and defeated Qarabag.
The situation wasn't extremely intense, but West Ham was still being difficult and causing delays.
However, Leverkusen remained composed and calm, continuing their aggressive approach towards the Hammers. They persistently searched for opportunities to capitalize on any opening in and around the penalty box.
Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka spoke with TNT Sports and expressed his confidence in his team's ability to score at any given moment. According to Xhaka, they have the necessary qualities to do so.
It's always a challenge to create openings when opposing teams like this one, and others who visit the BayArena, play defensively and occupy the backfield.
It required two set-piece occasions to crack the opposition team, and Hofmann managed to shine by converting a volley amidst a crowded penalty area following a failure to clear the initial ball.
After a quick corner, he delivered the ball and Boniface leapt the highest to head in the goal at the distant post. This was his 17th goal this season.
Alonso remarked that it was a challenging task. The opposition had a solid defense and consistently had numerous players guarding the penalty area.
We were patient and finally got the opportunity we were waiting for, even though it arrived later than we expected.
Alonso's team still has work to do, but they have the skills to achieve victory. With a considerable lead heading into the next round, they will feel assured about making it to the semi-finals.
