Goals: Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 West Ham United | West Ham United F.C.
To secure their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League for the third time in a row, West Ham United needs to overturn their disadvantage. This comes after Bayer Leverkusen's effectively timed substitution of Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface, who both scored late in the match to secure a 2-0 victory at BayArena.
The football team led by David Moyes followed a well-planned strategy right from the start of the match. Although their goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański had to make some crucial saves during the first half of the game, they had a good opportunity to take the lead thanks to Mohammed Kudus' effort.
During the second half, the game became more open and the visiting team started to control the ball. Despite withstanding a lot of pressure from Leverkusen, they managed to score with Hofmann breaking the tie with only seven minutes remaining. Boniface then scored again during extra time, giving his team a two-goal lead.
The outcome has placed West Ham in a less advantageous position against a team that hasn't lost any games in the 2023/24 season before the upcoming home match next week. Nevertheless, they still retain hope that they can repeat their comeback from the previous round against SC Freiburg - another team from the same country as Leverkusen.
