Simone Biles magic leads USA to world gymnastics championships gold medal
Simone Biles didn't finish the Olympic team final and had to sit out for the rest of the night two years ago. However, this year, she competed until the very end.
After a difficult evening of injuries and doubt, Biles was tasked with securing yet another gold medal. She exhibited strong nerves and performed an impressive routine, resulting in a standing ovation from the Antwerp spectators. The United States was able to claim their sixth successive team gold medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships with a total score of 167.729.
The evening was marked by two exceptional displays by the United States. Meanwhile, Rebeca Andrade and Flávia Saraiva, two outstanding athletes from Brazil who were struggling with injuries, managed to secure the first ever team silver medal for their nation. Their score of 165.530 marked a significant achievement.
In the same way, Mélanie de Jesus dos Santos decided to leave Paris and move to Biles's family gym in Texas to achieve her long-awaited success. Her efforts paid off as she led France to their first-ever world bronze medal, scoring an impressive 164.064. Other countries also showed significant improvement, leaving Great Britain behind to finish in sixth place during a challenging night in Antwerp.
Even though they won, the United States had some bad luck at the beginning. When they were practicing their first event, Joscelyn Roberson hurt her left foot while attempting a tough Cheng vault and had to drop out of the competition. Despite a few mistakes, the US team had strong players and Simone Biles once again did exceptionally well to lead them to victory.
Biles stated that our team showed remarkable determination, bravery, and resilience this year, particularly after all the events that occurred on the playing field.
"When Jos went down, someone else took his place. Today, the team experienced many different emotions, and it wasn't the best day for USA. Despite this, we were still able to come out successful, and I am extremely proud of our team."
Soon after, Jessica Gadirova stumbled while attempting her own Cheng. Great Britain faced further falls on the uneven bars and balance beam, making the possibility of winning a third consecutive medal seem increasingly unlikely.
Instead, the medals were fiercely contended for until the very end by Brazil, France, China, and Italy. Brazil emerged victorious as the top contender, with Andrade's impressive performance on the floor routine and Cheng's vault securing the silver medal.
Exactly ten years after winning her first world medal in the same arena, Biles once again proved why she is a reigning champion. With all eyes on her in the final rotation, and despite being the last gymnast to compete, Biles delivered a stunning floor routine that earned her the highest score of the entire competition - an impressive 15.166. As she left the stage, the crowd in Antwerp gave her a loud round of applause, recognizing the return of a true legend.
Biles has completed her initial competition out of six in total, resulting in her possessing 33 medals between the Olympic games and world championships. This accomplishment places her on equal footing with Vitaly Scherbo for the all-time record holder. With her fifth world team championship win, Biles became the foremost woman to have achieved an abundance of world team medals.
