Canadian musician Shawn Mendes addressed his sexuality during a concert in Colorado, finally sharing his truth after years of speculation.
The 26-year-old artist known for "Treat You Better," who has had relationships with fellow pop singers Camila Cabello and Sabrina Carpenter, has long expressed that speculation about his sexuality has been distressing for him. He has mentioned feeling pressured to be seen in public with a woman to demonstrate that he is not gay.
During his performance at Morrison’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on October 28, Mendes mentioned that he had been contemplating whether or not to share something during the show.
After taking a brief pause, Mendes received applause from his fans before opening up about his experiences as a teenager in the music industry. He reflected on how he first entered the scene at the young age of 15.
"Honestly, I missed out on many experiences typical for a 15-year-old and didn't have the chance to explore aspects of myself that usually emerge at that age," he shared.
"My sexuality has been a topic of conversation for quite a while now. I find it a bit absurd, as I see sexuality as something wonderfully intricate, and it's really difficult to categorize it neatly."
“It always felt like a violation of something deeply personal. It was a journey I was navigating within myself, something I was still in the process of uncovering and continue to explore.”
“The honest reality of my life and my sexual orientation is that I’m still trying to understand it, just like many others. It can be quite intimidating, especially since we live in a world that often has strong opinions about it. I’m making an effort to be courageous and simply embrace my humanity and my emotions. That’s all I want to share on the topic for now.”
He went on to share that creating his new song "The Mountain" was significant for him, as it provided an opportunity to express something meaningful from the heart. He expressed that he's speaking openly now because he wants to connect more deeply with everyone and share his authentic self.

Mendes has received an outpouring of admiration for his sincere remarks, and numerous fans have come to his defense amid the ongoing conversations about his sexuality over the years.
"Public figures don't owe us any explanations; we should stop inquiring about their sexual orientation and allow them to lead their lives," expressed a supporter.
Another commenter mentioned, “He genuinely comes across as a kind person who truly desires peace. I hope you find it, sweetheart.”
At the same time, another individual commented, “It's important for people to have the freedom to live their lives the way they choose, without feeling pressured to discuss their experiences openly all the time.”
This follows Mendes’ heartfelt homage to Liam Payne, a former member of One Direction, who tragically passed away at the age of 31.
While performing at the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre in New York, Mendes shared with the audience that the news was “heartbreaking.”
He mentioned, "I had the chance to meet Liam a few times, and he was such a wonderful person. The sparkle in his eyes was truly amazing."
It’s about mourning the people we long for and shedding tears, but it’s also about honoring their memory, cherishing who they were, and recognizing the impact they had on our lives. I just want to take a moment to send a lot of love to him, wherever he may be.
"Liam, we care about you deeply. Everyone is mourning for you, my friend, and we’re all lifting your son and family up in our thoughts. I really miss you. So tonight, this is dedicated to you, Liam, from all of us."
