The manager of the Netherlands, Ronald Koeman, believed that England received an undeserved penalty in their Euro 2024 semi-final loss. However, he thinks that the Three Lions have the ability to defeat Spain in the final on Sunday.
A quick goal from Xavi Simons gave the Oranje an early lead, but a strong comeback from Gareth Southgate's team led to Harry Kane scoring a penalty and turning the tide in the rest of the first half.
Following a strong performance by the Dutch team, England's substitutes ultimately made the difference in the match as Ollie Watkins scored a crucial goal in the closing minutes, securing their spot in the final game in Berlin.
Koeman recognized that England had a strong response, but he felt disheartened by the way his team was eliminated.
I felt let down after a game that began positively for us. However, we encountered difficulties in the midfield with Bellingham and Foden playing in the spaces in between. We made adjustments to try to take charge of the game, and in the final 20 minutes, we were the stronger team, pushing forward more aggressively. Unfortunately, we were dealt a defeating blow at the last minute.
"It's a fantastic achievement, but once it's finished, it's hard to come to terms with," he remarked.
When asked if England had a chance of beating Spain, who many consider to be the best team at the European Championship this summer, Koeman noted that although both teams attack in different ways, England's performance in the first half showed that they were capable of competing.
"England displayed impressive soccer skills in the first half, despite initially trailing 1-0. In comparison, the Spanish national team tends to play more aggressively with wide players and focus on maintaining possession of the ball. It is important to find a way to counteract their style of play."
"But England has made it to the final and has a chance to win. Even though Spain is considered the favorites due to their strong performance, England has the potential to defeat them. Why not give it a try?"
