Penny Mordaunt, who was in charge of the government, has been defeated by the Labour Party in Portsmouth North. This makes her the newest Cabinet member to lose their position in the 2024 General Election.

Amanda Martin, who ran as a Labour candidate, will now take over as the MP for Portsmouth North, winning 14,495 votes compared to Mordaunt's 13,715. She won by a majority of 780 votes with a turnout of 58 percent.

In the south of England, Labour has secured another victory, marking a significant win for the party. The last time Labour won this seat was in 2005. Leading up to the election, Labour was optimistic about their chances of winning, as this seat has historically been a reliable indicator of which party will go on to form the Government since 1974.

Mordaunt won by a large margin in the 2019 election, increasing her lead by over 13 percent. However, losing her seat shows the significant decrease in Conservative backing in this year's election.

Other members of the cabinet who are at risk of losing their position include Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, with results expected in the early hours of Friday.

The seats of Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, and Education Secretary Gillian Keegan have already been taken away.
