Mariah Carey announced that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, passed away during the weekend, according to a statement released by the singer.

"I am devastated to share that my mother passed away over the weekend," Carey shared on Monday. "Tragically, my sister also lost her life on that same day."

The vocalist expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be with her mother in the days leading up to her passing, and has requested to be given space during this time.

No additional information was provided regarding the reasons for the deaths.

Patricia, who is 87 years old, used to sing opera and teach people how to sing. She is of Irish-American heritage.

In Mariah Carey's 2020 book, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer, who has won five Grammy Awards, talked about her difficult relationship with her mother, describing it as something that brought her a lot of suffering and uncertainty.

Carey mentioned that there was competition between the two of them and that feeling of envy is common when you are successful. However, it was especially hurtful for her when it came from her own mother at a young age.

However, she also expressed her profound love for her mother, stating in the dedication: "To Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I truly believe did her utmost. I will always love you to the best of my ability."

During a conversation with Gayle King in 2022, the 55-year-old vocalist mentioned that the negative feedback she received from her mother during her childhood "certainly impacted me".

She mentioned that she has always given credit to her mother for introducing her to music.

Carey had a complicated relationship with her elder sister, Alison, who is 63 years old.

In her personal story, she described feeling disconnected from her sibling, Morgan, explaining that she felt it was better for her well-being to maintain distance and avoid contact.

Alison took legal action against Carey for $1.2 million (£909,780) after the publication of the memoir caused her significant emotional pain. She described the memoir as "cruel" and hurtful.

The father of the singer, Alfred, passed away in 2002 due to cancer when he was 72 years old.

Carey is considered one of the most accomplished singers in the world.

The song "All I want for Christmas is You" by her is the top-selling Christmas song by a female artist ever.

She has the most top songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a solo artist, with 19 number-one hits. She has sold more than 220 million records globally and was a judge on American Idol.
