Haaland makes history - but Man City miss record bid

Man City

Erling Haaland scored his first goal against Liverpool, which was inside the box. It's worth noting that 96% of his Premier League goals have been scored from that area.

It's a new day, and time for another match. Erling Haaland has scored another goal, adding to his growing record.

On Saturday, the striker of Manchester City achieved a new record by scoring the opening goal in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool. He became the quickest player in history to reach 50 goals in the English Premier League.

Haaland has not only established a new record, but he has utterly demolished it, achieving the milestone in a mere 48 league matches.

Before this, Andrew Cole was the one who held the record and it took him 65 games to reach it. Even Alan Shearer, who is still the highest scorer in the Premier League, took 66 matches to accomplish it.

Haaland keeps on breaking records for City ever since he transferred from Borussia Dortmund last summer. This one is just the newest addition to his long list of accomplishments.

Last season, he scored 36 goals which is the highest number of goals scored in one season. This includes the first three years of the competition where teams played 42 games.

Haaland's injury during Norway's international duty made it uncertain if he would play against Liverpool. However, the striker managed to recover and has now scored a remarkable 14 goals in the current season. He has even surpassed Mohamed Salah's record by four goals.

This season, he has been scoring at an average of 1.13 goals per game in the league. He has also tried to shoot the ball 43 times, which is the highest among all players in the league. Out of these attempts, 67% of them hit the target, with the remaining 33% finding the back of the net.

Since the beginning of last season, Haaland has netted the highest number of goals amongst the major five European leagues, namely Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga and Ligue 1.

With 50 goal scores in only 48 matches, he outranks Harry Kane who has achieved 48 goals in 50 matches for Tottenham as well as Bayern Munich.

When compared to Haaland's impressive goal record in top European leagues, Kylian Mbappe's 43 goals in his last 46 games for Paris St-Germain may seem significantly less impressive.

Haaland's initial half-century of goals in the Premier League is notable not only for their abundance but also for their lack of variety. He is remarkably consistent and opposition teams are well aware of his style, yet preventing his scoring spree remains a challenge.

Out of the total 50 goals, only a measly two were scored from beyond the penalty area. The remaining 48 goals were scored inside the box, with 33 of them made using his left foot, six with his right foot, and the remaining 10 scored through headers.

Haaland scored his important goal against Liverpool in a fitting manner by using his left foot to strike the ball from inside the designated area.

'Erling's Quality Is Known'

He has marked against Liverpool, making them the 20th team in the Premier League he has scored against out of 21 opponents. The only team that has prevented his scoring is Brentford.

On the opposite side of things, much to the delight of Manchester City supporters, we have Manchester United and Fulham, the two teams that Haaland has successfully netted five goals in the Premier League against.

Haaland is consistently successful, but Man City has not been performing well this season. They were leading the table prior to the weekend, but their recent draw with Chelsea and this latest result show their inability to maintain their form.

Trent Alexander-Arnold evened the score with a goal 10 minutes before the end of the game, stopping City from making history as the first team to win every league match at home in a year, a feat last achieved by Sunderland in 1894.

Pep Guardiola, who previously won all 23 games played at the Etihad Stadium, failed to match the record of Tom Watson, the manager of Sunderland's undefeated team, which won three top-flight titles.

Guardiola wasn't extremely sorrowful, as he conveyed his satisfaction regarding his team's performance against Liverpool, despite losing two points.

During an interview that will be broadcasted on Match of the Day by the BBC, he praised the performance and expressed his pride in the team's consistency after eight years of play. The team demonstrated excellence across all facets of the game in order to match up against an extraordinary opponent.

Regarding Haaland's goal, which occurred when he received a brief pass from Nathan Ake, entered the box, and swiftly struck a low shot that Alisson managed to touch, Guardiola commented: "The execution was impeccable and Ake's set-up was top-notch. We were well aware of Erling's skillset."

The Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, expressed contentment with the result and shared on Sky Sports that it was a favorable outcome. He acknowledged the difficulty of playing at the opposing team's home ground, highlighting their impressive track record of winning games there.

We are currently in the middle of a process. Even though we played relatively well, we did not play our absolute best, which could have led us to victory. During the half-time break, I encouraged the team to visualize how much better our performance would be if we played at the top of our game.

We experienced some enjoyable moments. I really wish we could have had more of them though. For the current situation we find ourselves in, we ought to consider the point achieved as a success. I don't have any grievances regarding that.
