Miedema on target as Arsenal beat Liverpool in WSL
Vivianne Miedema netted her initial Arsenal goal since December 2022, thus giving the away team a lead.
Arsenal managed to secure a win at Liverpool, with Vivianne Miedema scoring her inaugural Women's Super League goal since coming back from an extended knee injury.
The Dutch striker had been sidelined for 310 days due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) she suffered in December 2022. In only her second league appearance this season, she scored the first goal at Prenton Park.
The first half of the game was uninteresting, but on the hour mark, Miedema confidently moved forward and shot from 20 yards away. Her powerful attempt went in after hitting Liverpool's centre-back Gemma Bonner and deflecting.
After a gap of nine minutes, Arsenal managed to increase their advantage. This was made possible when Beth Mead flew through the right path and provided a perfect pass for Caitlin Foord to score from a very near distance.
The Gunners emerged victorious against Liverpool, who posed minimal danger. This triumph coincided with Jonas Eidevall's 100th game in charge. The result has placed them within three points of the leaders, Chelsea.
Although the visitors had control of the ball, their control was unproductive during the initial 45 minutes of play. Neither team was able to generate significant opportunities, resulting in a lackluster match.
Things took a turn during injury time at the end of the first half when Liverpool launched a quick counter-attack. Melissa Lawley raced down the left and delivered a cross that posed a challenge, but Yana Daniels, who was in a prime position in the middle, missed her shot and sent it over the bar due to pressure from Arsenal captain Katie McCabe.
Arsenal reacted swiftly to the situation and sent a pass from Foord along the byeline towards the Liverpool goalkeeper Rachael Laws, but it managed to barely pass her and was almost a goal until defender Niamh Fahey cleared it away from the goal line.
In the second half of the game, the same things were happening as in the first half. However, Arsenal managed to get a goal with the help of a lucky bounce, which gave Miedema an opportunity to score a remarkable goal. This was particularly exciting because it had been over a year since her last goal.
Once Foord scored the second goal, Stina Blackstenius, who had entered the game as a substitute, got several chances to score but she couldn't turn them into goals. In the end, she hit the post during added time.
At the same time, the captain of England, Leah Williamson, did not get a chance to play as she gets closer to her recovery from an ACL injury.
