A health trust raised important issues about the hospital treatment of former Arsenal and Everton footballer Kevin Campbell during an inquest.

Mr. Campbell, who was 54 years old, passed away at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) on 15 June following his admission to the hospital a month earlier.

Coroner Zak Golombek mentioned that Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, which oversees the hospital, had reported a Level 5 patient safety incident - the highest level of severity - regarding certain aspects of his treatment.

He mentioned that the temporary reason for Mr. Campbell's death was multiple organ failure caused by a heart infection.

No relatives were in attendance at the Manchester Coroner's Court as Mr. Golombek provided background information during the opening of the inquest on Thursday.

He mentioned that Mr. Campbell was taken to the MRI on May 15th.

The coroner mentioned that he was in good health until January 2024, when he had multiple hospital visits before his last admission.

Mr. Golombek stated that the healthcare organization classified a Level 5 emergency regarding a holdup in certain parts of Mr. Campbell's treatment and assessment, as well as worries about the decision-making procedures regarding palliative care.

Kevin Campbell had been in the hospital multiple times before his last visit in May.

Mr. Golombek mentioned that the trust is currently carrying out internal inquiries and will provide additional documentation such as the investigation report, testimonies from medical professionals, and a statement from Mr. Campbell's closest family member.

He stated: "I have been informed by the trust that they can provide a medical reason for Mr. Campbell's death. Therefore, I will review the information provided by the healthcare professionals who treated Mr. Campbell in order to determine the cause of his passing.

The current reason for Mr. Campbell's death is listed as multi-organ failure due to infective endocarditis.

Endocarditis is a uncommon infection that affects the inside lining or valves of the heart.

It can be extremely severe and sometimes deadly.

One of the main reasons for this condition is when bacteria travel through the bloodstream from another part of the body and attach to the valves of the heart.

Mr. Golombek stated that conclusive decisions regarding the medical reason for Mr. Campbell's death and the treatment he received will be determined during the inquest procedure.

The hearing has been postponed to a future date.
