Harry Kane, the captain of England, expressed deep sadness as the team headed back to the United Kingdom from Germany following a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
England was unable to secure a victory as Mikel Oyarzabal, who came on as a substitute, scored a decisive goal in the final moments of the game in Berlin on Sunday.
Nico Williams was the first to score in Spain's victory just two minutes into the second half. Despite Cole Palmer scoring to tie the game, La Roja came out on top and won their fourth European Championship title.
Kane expressed his sadness about the loss on Monday by sharing on X: "I am devastated that we were not able to reach our goal despite our hard work. The tournament was challenging, but I am incredibly proud of the team and staff for making it to the final."
In the end, we didn't reach our goal. We'll accept that and move on. We'll bounce back, brush ourselves off, and get ready to compete in an England jersey once more.
"Big thanks to all the dedicated supporters who believed in our team and stood by us until the very last moment!"
Gareth Southgate and the England team received cheers from fans as they departed their hotel in Berlin. However, the FA revealed that the players and staff will not be welcomed by supporters upon their arrival in the U.K. Instead, they will be landing at a private terminal.
"We want to express our gratitude to all of our amazing supporters for their continuous backing during the tournament," the FA shared in a post on X.
