Jeremy Hunt rules himself out of Tory leadership race

Hunt is one of the most seasoned Tory MPs still in office. He was appointed as chancellor during Liz Truss's brief time in power after she had to let go of Kwasi Kwarteng due to a poorly thought-out budget.

He continued in the position with Sunak, and had previously been the foreign secretary under Theresa May and the health secretary and culture secretary under David Cameron.

In the general election on Thursday, Hunt barely managed to keep his seat in the Godalming and Ash constituency, despite predictions that he would lose in the Labour victory.

Four ex-Conservative Home Office ministers are reportedly preparing to run for leadership: James Cleverly, Suella Braverman, Robert Jenrick, and Priti Patel. Former Security Minister Tom Tugendhat is also anticipated to announce a moderate bid for leadership of the party.

The Conservatives are split on various issues like taxes and immigration, which could lead to a contentious competition.
