Murphy has held various positions at ITV News, including reporting on the United States, covering Europe, and serving as a senior journalist.

She stated: "In this period of major shifts in how news is consumed, I am thrilled to introduce a new perspective and enhance our international reporting. As reporters, we witness firsthand the biggest global events. In my new position, I am dedicated to offering insights that highlight their importance and influence."

Murphy is replacing Rageh Omaar, who has held the position of international affairs editor for 11 years. He will now be taking on the role of international affairs analyst. ITV News stated that Murphy will still provide detailed analysis on international news, appear on the monthly current affairs program On Assignment, and also present on News at Ten.

Murphy has reported on various events such as the war in Ukraine, the tensions between Israel and Hamas, the earthquake in Turkey/Syria, the Capitol riot on 6 January, Joe Biden's inauguration, the trial of Ghislaine Maxwell, the devastating Notre Dame fire, the decline of ISIS, the tragic Manchester Arena bombing, and the Grenfell Tower fire.

Earlier in the year, she joined approximately 55 foreign correspondents from the UK and US in signing a letter asking Israel to allow them access to Gaza for unbiased reporting. Unfortunately, their request has not been granted yet.

Andrew Dagnell, who is in charge of the news at ITV, spoke highly of Emma's leadership abilities and journalistic skills. He mentioned that she has consistently stood out among her colleagues for her exclusive reporting and ability to handle the daily duties of her job. Dagnell believes that Emma's years of experience and creative approach will enhance the team and improve their international news coverage.
