Ipswich salvage draw in thriller against West Brom

Ipswich Town

Tom Fellows scored his third goal in a span of five games while playing for West Bromwich Albion.

Omari Hutchinson scored a last-gasp goal to secure Ipswich Town a valuable point in a match against fellow promotion contenders, West Bromwich Albion.

The team called Tractor Boys appeared destined for a third consecutive loss within seven days after conceding two goals from young player Tom Fellows and John Swift.

However, as soon as Nathan Broadhead scored a goal at the beginning of the second half, Hutchinson also scored a goal in the last three minutes of the game - guaranteeing that Ipswich, who are in fourth place, remain 11 points ahead of Albion in fifth place.

If it weren't for a great save made by West Brom's Alex Palmer in the end, Ali Al-Hamadi could have won the game for his team, giving them three points.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Albion's strikers, with Fellows managing to score his first away goal for the team. However, there was a unfortunate turn of events for Daryl Dike, whose injury-prone career suffered yet another serious setback. This happened mere 10 minutes after he had been brought on as a substitute.

Starting off the year 2024 without scoring any goals, the young 20-year-old, Fellows, finally managed to put his team in the lead by scoring his third goal in just five games. This ignited an exciting and memorable encounter that begun to take shape just 15 minutes into the game.

Andi Weimann had his first start with Albion and showed some great moves by skillfully launching a pass forward. Fellows chased after it, then skillfully controlled the ball and pushed past the first defender Luke Woolfenden. Fellows used his strength to get past Woolfenden and then used his speed to round him before turning back inside to make a thrilling shot using his right foot. He aimed at the space between the Harry Clarke's legs and scored by hitting it perfectly inside the left post.

During the final moments of the first half, Clarke attempted to redeem himself by taking a curling shot with his left foot which was saved by Alex Palmer's tip.

However, the situation also revealed that Albion was without their centre-half, Kyle Bartley, who had to leave due to a strained calf muscle. At half-time, the team made some changes. Unfortunately, in less than two minutes into the second half, the opponents exploited this weakness and managed to tie the game.

George Edmundson headed the ball towards the far end of the field from a corner on the right side. Broadhead was all alone near the post and showed his skills in adjusting his position to hit the ball at an uncomfortable height. He then kicked the ball back towards Palmer from where it went straight to the bottom corner.

Weimann was able to shoot the ball into the Ipswich net, but the goal was not counted. He had intentionally hit the ball with his left hand, which is against the rules, and was given a yellow card. This was because he did it to avoid injuring himself by colliding with the left post.

It got even worse when Dike, who was having really bad luck, only managed to play for 10 minutes after being subbed on in the 55th minute for Brandon Thomas-Asante.

Dike had to leave on a golf cart, crying sadly, due to yet another injury setback adding to his already lengthy list of injuries.

In a strangely coincidental turn of events, it appeared that the player who took over for him, Swift, had the chance to score the winning goal. He found himself with plenty of room and skillfully curled a right-footed shot from 20 yards out into the bottom corner of the net. This marked his first goal since October.

However, Ipswich had a different perspective on who would make the news, particularly after Jeremy Sarmiento, who had been on loan to Albion, was substituted in the 83rd minute. Hutchinson took advantage of a powerful home team finish and scored a goal with a volley that managed to get past a group of players and into the net.

Albion will be playing against Cardiff City on Tuesday night in their upcoming game.

Ipswich will be playing their match against Millwall on a different day, as it has been scheduled for later. They will have to journey to face their opponent.

Kieran McKenna, the manager of Ipswich Town, shared with BBC Radio Suffolk in an interview:

There are many things that we can take pride in, both on and off the field, but we have made a genuine effort to accomplish them.

It's tough to play against a team as skilled and seasoned as West Brom, so it was quite a feat to give such an outstanding performance. Even though we fell behind 2-1, it didn't seem fair based on how the game had gone so far. Nonetheless, it was a thrilling match to participate in!

"If we had managed to secure the victory in the end, we would have been discussing a memorable game at Portman Road."

During an interview with BBC Radio WM, the manager of West Bromwich Albion, Carlos Corberan, made statements.

We were aware of the intense competition and the amount of fear that Ipswich can generate when playing on their home turf.

It was a major setback for us when Kyle Bartley got injured. He experienced a strain in his calf, prompting us to conduct a knee scan.

However, the more concerning issue is the absence of Daryl Dike. It is a major setback to lose him once again. Currently, it is uncertain how long his departure will last. It could possibly be a comparable injury, but ideally less severe. He has encountered an Achilles injury but on a different foot this time around. Prior to any further actions, we must first conduct a scan.
