Ipswich beat Blackburn to go top of Championship

Ipswich Town

This season, Conor Chaplin has netted a total of 13 goals.

Ipswich Town secured the top spot in the Championship with Conor Chaplin's early goal leading them to a close victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Chaplin made a mistake by hitting the ball at the wrong time in the ninth minute. The Rovers goalkeeper, Aynsley Pears, should have been able to catch it, but the ball went past him and into the goal. This was all the Tractor Boys needed to gain an advantage of two points over Leeds United, who will be playing against Watford at 20:00 GMT.

Blackburn believed they had scored a goal that would have tied the game thanks to Joe Rankin-Costello. However, the referees disapproved the goal as it was deemed that Sammie Szmodics interfered with the goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky's ability to see when he was in an offside position.

After half-time, the Rovers were clearly the stronger team and almost scored another goal when Andrew Moran's effort was disallowed due to a foul on the goalkeeper. Later, Hladky made an excellent save by preventing Szmodics from scoring into an open goal.

Ipswich achieved their eighth win in nine games, but they had to work hard to secure three points in Lancashire.

In complete opposition, Rovers have been unsuccessful in their last eight league games and their current position is just three points away from being relegated.

The team playing at home must have been incredibly disappointed with how the game started. Pears made a mistake which gave the other team an advantage. Chaplin managed to get to the ball and passed it to Leif Davis, who crossed it back to Chaplin. He then quickly kicked the ball with his left foot, and it went past Pears and into the goal.

Rankin-Costello scored a goal after receiving a pass from Tyrhys Dolan on the left. However, the referee Stuart Atwell had a conversation with his assistant and concluded that Szmodics, who was stood offside, had affected the goalkeeper's view.

Rovers put a lot of pressure on their opponents in the second part of the game. They had another goal that wouldn't count because of a foul committed by Scott Wharton on Hladky. Then, Moran achieved an outstanding goal using his right foot.

They were extremely close to getting a goal that would have tied up the game when Hladky spent too much time within his six-yard box. Szmodics ended up intercepting his clearance, spun around, and looked like he was going to score. However, Hladky took a risk and dove to save the ball with his left arm.

It appeared as though Ipswich required another point to secure a win and they managed to generate two opportunities whilst on the counter-attack. However, Ali Al-Hamadi unfortunately missed the mark with his shot from Kayden Jackson's angled cross, with the ball flying over the bar. Additionally, Jackson attempted a shot from an awkward angle but was only able to fire wide of the goal.

The guests managed to secure a small advantage, which they managed to maintain despite a series of last-minute corners and a deflected shot by Harry Pickering that went over the goalpost.
