Erling Haaland is expected to decide just before the match if he will participate in the game against Brentford this weekend, after the passing of a dear family friend.

Ivar Eggja served as the best man at Alf-Inge Haaland's wedding and was lovingly referred to as "uncle" by Erling. At 59 years old, Eggja formed a strong bond with the Manchester City forward and played a significant role in his close circle of friends.

"Ivar, you’re truly amazing," Haaland shared on social media this week, along with several pictures featuring Eggja. "I can't express how significant you were in my life! I can't put into words how much you will be missed!"

"Thanks for everything, you crazy guy. We'll meet again. Take care, Ivar."

Haaland's representative, Rafaela Pimenta, also expressed her admiration.

"From the moment I first met you, I believed your gift was to light up every space you entered," she stated. "I had no idea it was actually a superpower, or that you'd face so many challenges so quickly, demonstrating an incredible blend of strength, grace, resilience, and hope that everyone around you can only aspire to."

"I felt privileged to play a small role in your journey."

Haaland was seen practicing with the squad as usual on Thursday. However, before the Premier League game at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, City’s coach Pep Guardiola commented: “It has been a difficult time for him and his family. It's unfortunate news... Our hearts go out to him and his loved ones. We'll assess tomorrow whether he's fit both mentally and physically to participate.”

If Haaland plays, Brentford must find a way to contain him if they want to build on their 3-1 victory against newly promoted Southampton prior to the international break.

The Norwegian player has netted three goals in each of his first three games, achieving this feat against Ipswich and West Ham.

When questioned about how to contain Haaland, Brentford's coach Thomas Frank responded, “It’s nearly impossible. Many teams have attempted to limit his impact, but he’s just an outstanding player.”
