The National Rally in France did not win the most seats in parliament as predicted by the exit polls. Instead, the New Popular Front coalition on the left is expected to be in the lead.

In a surprising turn of events for Marine Le Pen, an initial poll conducted by Ipsos indicated that the NFP coalition is projected to secure anywhere between 172 and 192 seats. The Ensemble group, supported by Emmanuel Macron, is expected to come in second place, with Le Pen's party trailing behind in third place.

Mr. Macron shocked even his own supporters by announcing the unexpected election last month, following the significant advancements of the anti-immigration National Rally in the European elections.

The president took a risk by assuming that French voters would once again prevent the far right from gaining power.

However, the National Rally managed to secure a higher percentage of votes than ever before during the initial round of voting on June 30th.

Over 200 candidates from the Macron-supporting Ensemble alliance and left-wing New Popular Front decided to withdraw from their races where there was going to be a three-way competition. This was part of a strategy to unite against the far-right in what is being called a "republican front".

Shock Left Win In French Elections Thwarts Far Right, Says Exit Polls

France made a decision to not support far-right parties, as a group of leftist parties are projected to be the biggest in a parliament that doesn't have a clear majority, based on surprising exit poll predictions.

In a surprising change of events on Sunday evening, Marine Le Pen received disappointing news as Ipsos exit polls showed that her far-right National Rally party had not been able to take advantage of its growing popularity. This popularity had caused centrist president Emmanuel Macron to rush into calling for snap parliamentary elections.

Many predicted that the National Rally would come out as the biggest party in France's National Assembly, as most voters were wondering if the far right could gain enough seats to form the country's first government like that since the Nazi occupation.

On the contrary, the left-leaning New Popular Front, which includes the Socialists, Greens, Communists, and Jean-Luc Melenchon's far-left France Unbowed (LFI), was expected to have the most seats in France's National Assembly as voting ended at 8pm local time.
