Freed journalist Evan Gershkovich raises plight of other political prisoners in Russia
Free journalist Evan Gershkovich has brought attention to the situation of other political prisoners who are still imprisoned in Russian jails.
Talking on the runway after landing in the US, the journalist mentioned he was very moved by the display of encouragement from the people who had gathered.
Mr Gershkovich was one of about twenty people who were part of the largest exchange of prisoners between Western countries and Russia since the Cold War.
British national Vladimir Kara-Murza and ex-member of the US military Paul Whelan were both freed by Moscow.
Mr. Gershkovich shared with The Guardian that he recently spent a month in jail in Yekaterinburg. He mentioned that all the people he met while incarcerated were political prisoners, but their identities are not widely known.
"Today was a very emotional situation... but I believe it would be beneficial to explore possible solutions for them as well," he said.
As reported by the Russian organization OVD-Info, over 1,000 individuals are currently detained in Russia due to prosecutions driven by politics.
President Joe Biden greeted Mr. Gershkovich and the rest of the passengers as they left their plane. He expressed that the American detainees' difficult experience had finally come to an end, praising their release as a successful outcome of diplomatic efforts between several nations. He also emphasized that it was a huge relief for the families involved.
