Dragon Age: The Veilguard reviews - What critics have said about the new game

Dragon Age Veilguard

Dragon Age has returned! A decade after the previous main entry, Dragon Age: Inquisition, the new game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, has launched. According to Metacritic, it ranks alongside the original in terms of quality.

This game takes a significant commitment of 40 to 60 hours to complete. But with titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Dragon's Dogma 2 also vying for your attention, is it really worth dedicating so much effort to it?

Even though it boasts an impressive Metacritic score of 84%, which ranks it right below the original Dragon Age: Origins from 2009, there are certain critiques that might deter some players.

Opinions vary regarding the storyline and writing of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, as well as the combat’s repetitive nature and the designs of non-player characters.

Let's take a glance at feedback from several prominent review outlets. We'll begin with the most favorable opinions and then explore critiques from those reviewers who didn't find themselves fully convinced by Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Eurogamer: "The Veilguard is beautifully crafted, showcasing elegance in both its mechanics and narrative. It radiates warmth and friendliness, offers humor and optimism, knows when to be tender, and, undeniably, has a grand scope."

IGN: Dragon Age: “The Veilguard revitalizes a beloved franchise that faced challenges in its earlier installments, proving it undeniably belongs among the top RPGs. The upcoming Mass Effect is going to have a challenging time living up to this standard.”

XBoxEra: “Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn't only on my list for Game of the Year; it’s also among my all-time favorite games.”

GamesRadar: "This game is an easy-to-pick-up, vast action RPG that serves as a fitting conclusion to the previous era of the franchise. While the story isn't completely over, a major part has come to an end."

...and The Less Positive Feedback

The Guardian: "The storytelling, which was a strong point in earlier games, is unexpectedly just average this time, and the new fighting system tends to become monotonous rather quickly."

VGC: "We noticed that we felt discouraged each time we entered a new area, only to be confronted with yet another obstacle that could be cleared simply by following a red line. This highlights a broader issue of monotony in the game. You mostly encounter just three or four types of enemies, which makes battles start to feel repetitive over time."

Inverse: "The Veilguard generally performs well... although the challenges of its new combat system and a disjointed storyline prevent it from reaching its full potential."

It's definitely a success, but similar to earlier installments in the series, it hasn't been without its critics.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard can be played on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S and X. However, it is currently not accessible via Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus.

The game will be launched on Thursday, October 31. This time around, the Deluxe edition does not provide any early access.
